Hawks Battle UMSL in GLVC Action

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team battled the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons on Thursday night (Feb. 6) in GLVC action. The Hawks had a better night shooting than the Tritons, but UMSL won the battle on the boards with 19 more rebounds in the contest.

How It Happened
Dami Adeyinka started off the scoring for QU in tonight's matchup. Her three-pointer put the Hawks (7-14, 3-10 GLVC) ahead 3-2 in the first minute of the game.

Aleksandra Petrovic followed suit with a three of her own to give Quincy a slight 6-4 advantage.

With 3:19 to go in the opening quarter, Alexa Low tied the score at 8-8.

From this point on, Missouri-St. Louis went on a 12-0 tear to charge ahead 20-8 just before the end of the first quarter. Going into the second, Quincy trailed 22-11.

After being outscored in the first, the Hawks flipped the script and charged back in the second. The home team outscored the Tritons 21-13 and shot 56% from the field to climb back into the game.

With 2:02 left in the first half, Ella Gobald drained a three to cut the UMSL lead to three points. The Tritons still led 31-28.

That deficit remained for QU as they went into the locker room down 35-32.

Out of the break, the Hawks looked to gain the lead. Laney Lantz hit a three-pointer which tied the game at 37 apiece. The score became knotted once more when Alexa Low hit a shot a minute later, but the Tritons ended the third quarter strong.

With under a minute in the third remaining, the score favored UMSL 45-43. The Tritons rattled off six unanswered points to gain some breathing room before the final ten minutes of play. QU trailed 51-43.

Both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net in the final quarter. Quincy started off with back-to-back buckets from Low to make the score 51-47 UMSL.

The next basket for either team did not come for another two and a half minutes until Missouri-St. Louis hit a mid-range jumper with 6:13 left to play.

Quincy's next basket came with 2:25 remaining when Jessica Merino hit a three from the left wing to keep her team alive. QU trailed 55-50.

Amanda Porth followed that with a breakaway steal and layup to make it a three-point game with two minutes to play.

Down the stretch, the Tritons made free throws to hold onto the lead. UMSL went a perfect four-for-four from the stripe in the last thirty seconds to secure a 61-56 win over the Hawks.

Alexa Low led all QU players with 18 points while snagging eight rebounds and blocking two shots.
