QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team took on both the top-ranked team in the GLVC and the 13th-ranked team in all of Division II on Thursday (Feb. 6) night. The Hawks did something that had not been done in years when they took down a ranked opponent in Pepsi Arena. Quincy pulled off the upset with a 67-57 win behind 19 points from
Charles Callier.
How It Happened
Three pointers rained down early and often on Thursday night. The Hawks (12-9, 6-7 GLVC) hit from deep in three of their first four shots as they opened the game by capturing an 11-5 lead.
Tanner Stuckman added two from beyond the arc while
Ryan Briscoe added another.
The 13th-ranked Tritons came storming back with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to go ahead 18-13 with 10:18 left in the opening half.
With 8:37 left in the first, the Hawks continued to groove from downtown.
Charles Callier knocked down back-to-back three's followed by another deep conversion from
Adam Moore. Moore's three-pointer tied the score 24-24 at the seven-minute mark.
Charles Callier continued to heat up when another made shot from beyond the arc gave QU the lead back 29-26 with five and a half minutes until halftime.
Viktor Kovacevic got in on the three-point party and gave the Hawks a six-point advantage 32-26.
The Hawks knocked down eight three's in the first half to give themselves a 34-26 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, QU cooled off considerably from deep, but the Hawks found other ways to get it done. After the first two minutes in the second half, Quincy gained a 12-point lead, 40-28.
Missouri-St. Louis swung the momentum back to their side by going on an 11-0 run. This cut the score to 40-39.
Charles Callier yet again sniped the Hawks back in front with two more three-pointers in a one-minute span. His sixth three-pointer of the game gave QU a 48-41 lead with 12:33 left to play.
Viktor Kovacevic fed off Callier's three-point shooting by taking advantage of UMSL's outstretched defense. The junior from Serbia scored the next six points for the Hawks with a mid-range jumper, a layup, and a pair of free throws. Quincy moved in front 54-43 with 8:23 left in the game.
At the five-minute mark,
Justin Warren extended QU's lead to 60-49 with a tough shot in the paint.
In the last five minutes, the Hawks defense swarmed the Tritons and allowed just two made field goal attempts. Behind the solid defense, Quincy knocked down enough free throws down the stretch to solidify the upset win.
The Hawks knocked off UMSL by the final score of 67-57. Quincy had not beaten a ranked opponent at home in over eight years.
Charles Calllier led the way with 19 points while shooting 6-for-8 from three point range. He also corralled eight rebounds and dished two assists.
Tanner Stuckman had 15 points, and
Viktor Kovacevic added 14 points with 5 rebounds.
