QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team faced off with the Buckeyes of Ohio State in Pepsi Arena on Friday night (Feb. 28). Ohio State pulled away late and swept the Hawks in three sets 25-17, 25-23, and 25-16.
1st Set
The Buckeyes got in front of the Hawks to start off the game. Ohio State kicked things off on a 4-1 run to take control early.
Blake Sprecher later tallied a kill to make the score 5-3 OSU.
The Hawks were forced to call an early timeout when the visiting Buckeyes pulled ahead 12-6.
Quincy cut the lead to five after a Buckeye service error made the score 13-8, but Ohio State never relinquished the lead.
OSU took the first set 25-17.
2nd Set
Quincy got off to a solid start in set two after they held a 3-2 lead in the first five points. Two errors on the Buckeyes allowed QU to jump ahead.
Ohio State came right back and gained the lead following a three-point run. The score moved to 6-4.
The Buckeyes lead grew to 12-8 before Quincy called their first timeout.
In the second half of set two, QU found themselves down by as many as seven points, but the Hawks made a late push to cut the score to 22-19.
Quincy went on a 4-1 run to bring the game back within range.
Eddie Jakubauskas and
Omari Wheeler had kills during the run.
After the timeout, the Hawks pulled within just two points, 24-22, after OSU reached set point. Ohio State called a timeout.
The Hawks dropped set two despite climbing back into it, 25-23.
3rd Set
The Buckeyes flew ahead to start the third set. OSU led 5-1 after the first six points.
Quincy's deficit grew to six points, and the first timeout was called when the score moved to 11-5.
Blake Sprecher and
Yoran Raymaekers combined for a block after the break to momentarily stop the momentum.
Zach Reider came off the bench and spiked a kill to bring QU's deficit to 18-11, but the Buckeyes proved to be too much for the Hawks.
The visitors remained in front for the rest of the set and sealed the straight-set victory with a 25-16 win.
No one on the Hawks surpassed double-digit kills in the contest, but
Omari Wheeler led QU with six on the night.
Next Game
The men's volleyball team will look to respond tomorrow night (Feb. 29) as they take on Ball State at 7 p.m. in Pepsi Arena.
