Wheeler and Meyer later combined for a block of the BSU attack to cut QU's deficit to just one point, 8-7.

The visiting Cardinals pulled slightly ahead when the score favored them 12-9, but QU quickly got back in it with back-to-back points.

Despite cutting Ball State's lead to just one point several times in set one, the Hawks were unable to take the lead.
