ROLLA, Mo. - The Quincy University women's basketball team started their final road swing of the season on Thursday (Feb. 27) evening at Missouri S&T. Despite holding a slight first-half lead, the Hawks were unable to fend off the Miners in the second half as they fell 84-77.
How It Happened
1st Half
Alexa Low and
Laney Lantz each got on the board in the first three minutes of play to give the Hawks an early two-point lead.
The Miners answered with a 10-1 run to go ahead 12-5.
QU quickly cut the lead to three after Low dropped in a layup and
Dami Adeyinka added a steal and score.
S&T opened their lead up to nine, but Low and
Ella Gobald knocked down two shots down the stretch to keep Quincy within striking distance. QUÂ trailed 20-14 after the first quarter.
The Hawks caught fire in the second period, shooting 58.8% from the field and outscoring the Miners 27-19.
The home team did the majority of their scoring in the first three minutes. S&T led by 15, but Quincy was not phased.
QU ended the first half on a 24-7 run.
Laney Lantz scored half of the Hawks points during that stretch, shooting 4-for-6 from the field and knocking down four free throws.
The freshman from Augusta, Illinois helped QU go into the locker room with a 41-39 lead.
2nd Half
The third quarter proved to be the difference maker, as the Hawks shot just 17.7% from the field.
S&T went 9-for-16 over the ten-minute span, which included shooting 75% from the three-point line.
QU found themselves down 64-50 going into the final quarter.
The Hawks showed fight in the fourth period, bringing the score back to within a two-possession game.
Sarah Nelson cut the S&T lead to six in the first two minutes of the quarter, but the Miners responded with a 7-0 run.
QU clawed back once again. The visiting team used a three-point play from
Laney Lantz and a driving layup from
Dami Adeyinka to make the score 76-72.
Despite the aggressive comeback from the Hawks, S&T knocked down 8-of-9 free throws in the final two minutes to seal the victory.
