Rockhurst Edges Past Quincy In Overtime Thriller

QUINCY, Ill. – Saturday afternoon's (Feb. 1) battle between the Hawks of Quincy University and the Hawks of Rockhurst proved to be worth the price of admission. Both teams battled back and forth, and it took an extra five-minute overtime period to decide the winner. Unfortunately for QU, Rockhurst made one more basket and escaped with a 70-68 win in Pepsi Arena.

How It Happened
Baskets came at a premium in the first half of play. Both teams struggled from the floor and could not get in much of a rhythm in the first twelve minutes.

With 8:42 left in the first half, both squads had just twelve points on the board.

Ryan Briscoe hit a three pointer to give Quincy (11-10, 5-7 GLVC) a slight 15-14 lead, and Justin Warren later drove the lane and converted to make the score 19-16 QU.

As 2:05 remained in the first half, Rockhurst once again tied the score at 21-21. In the last two minutes, both teams scored just two points each.

Going into halftime, the score was deadlocked 23-23.

Rockhurst captured the early momentum after the break. The visiting Hawks knocked in two three-pointers to gain a 29-23 lead.

For the next sixteen minutes, Quincy trailed. Rockhurst's lead grew to as big as twelve points with 11:50 to go. A layup by RU made the score 46-34.

From that point on, Quincy chipped away at the deficit. It took nearly ten minutes, but with 2:27 to play, Viktor Kovacevic tied the game 58-58 with a clutch three-pointer.

Quincy regained the lead for the first time since the first half after Aziz Fadika bullied his way for a basket in the paint to make it 60-58 QU.

In the last 1:15, Quincy was held without a score, but Rockhurst went 2-of-4 from the free throw stripe to leave the door open for the Hawks at the end.

Charles Callier shot a three with four seconds left, but his attempt missed the mark. The game moved to overtime in a 60-60 tie.

To begin overtime, both teams exchanged free throws. Rockhurst stepped in front after another made free throw and a mid-range jumper gave RU a 64-61 lead.

Quincy clapped back as Tanner Stuckman drained a shot from deep to tie the game at 64 apiece with 2:05 left to play.

With under a minute to go, Justin Warren hit a tough left-handed layup to put the Hawks ahead 66-64.

Rockhurst answered with a clutch three-pointer with 46 seconds left to give them a 67-66 lead. After Quincy came up empty on their offensive possession, Rockhurst got to the free throw line and knocked in a pair of free throws. The score moved to 69-66.

With under ten seconds left, Ryan Briscoe slashed to the basket for a layup and made it a one-point game.

Upon the inbounds, Rockhurst was fouled. They made one-of-two free throw attempts to leave the door open for QU once again on the final possession.

Briscoe sprinted the ball up the court as seven seconds remained. He dribbled to the right side and shot a corner three to win the game, but the shot spun out giving Rockhurst the two-point win.
