QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team returned to Pepsi Arena to take on the Maryville Saints on Thursday night (Jan. 9). The Hawks fell by the score of 76-61.
How It Happened
Quincy did not get the start they wanted after returning to Pepsi Arena for the first time in 2020. The Saints opened the game on a 7-0 run to gain the early lead.
Alexa Low got QU on the board with 7:06 remaining in the first quarter to make the score 7-2.
Later in the first quarter,
Aleksandra Petrovic scored on back-to-back possessions to bring her team within three points as the score moved to 11-8 MU. After the end of the opening quarter, Quincy trailed 16-10.
After Quincy scored the first bucket in the second quarter, Maryville went on a run. The Saints scored the next eight points to go ahead 24-12.
With under five minutes in the half,
Jessica Merino knocked in a three-pointer to bring the Hawks back within eight points, 27-19. Maryville countered with two three-pointers to go back ahead by fourteen points with 2:20 left in the second quarter.
Jessica Merino hit another shot from deep with 26 seconds left in the half, but Maryville had yet another answer by making a three at the buzzer. QU trailed 36-24 at the half.
At the start of the second half, QU was able to get the deficit to nine points, but this was the smallest deficit faced in the final twenty minutes.
The visiting Saints led by as much as 21 points in the fourth quarter and ended up taking the game by the score of 76-61.
