QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's basketball team surged past the Maryville Saints in the second half, beating them by a score of 87-67 at Pepsi Arena Thursday night (Jan. 9).
Tanner Stuckman led the way with 20 points, while
Charles Callier added 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting.
How It Happened
1st Half
The Hawks started off hot from behind the arc, nailing three of their first five three-pointers.
Charles Callier got things rolling by draining a three in the first minute of the game.
Austin Downing later found
Ryan Briscoe on a fast break for another triple to break a 7-7 tie. The Saints scored back-to-back buckets before Callier hit his second three in less than four minutes to put QU up 13-11.
Both teams traded baskets for the majority of the first half. Neither team could take more than a three-point lead until the seven-minute mark. Holding a two-point lead,
Tanner Stuckman hit Briscoe for his second three of the night to put the Hawks up 29-24.
Quincy stretched the lead to six with 32 seconds left in the half as Stuckman dropped in a layup off a feed from Downing.
Maryville answered right back with a three at the buzzer to cut the lead in half. QU led 39-36 heading into the locker room.
2nd Half
Quincy came out of the break firing on all cylinders, as they started the second half on a 17-0 run.
Charles Callier got things rolling with a steal and a two-handed slam to set the tone.
The junior from Houston, Texas found
Ryan Briscoe for a corner three on the next possession to stretch the lead to 44-36 and force a Maryville timeout.
Out of the timeout, it was all QU.
Tanner Stuckman got into the paint again for a layup and
Austin Downing poured in a three to make it a double-digit lead at 49-36.
The Hawks extended the lead to twenty with 15:12 remaining when Stuckman scored a layup off a pass from Briscoe.
The Saints scored their first points of the second half with fifteen minutes remaining, but it was too little, too late.
Quincy kept the foot on the gas, defeating the Saints 87-67 for their first win of the new decade.
