Hawks Earn First Win Of 2020 At William Jewell

LIBERTY, Mo. - The Quincy University women's basketball team earned their first win of the new decade Saturday afternoon (Jan. 4) at William Jewell College. The Hawks defeated the Cardinals 59-47 for their first GLVC win of the year.

How It Happened
1st Half
Both teams traded buckets to begin Saturday's contest, as the game saw four lead changes in the first four minutes.
 
Laney Lantz nailed a three-pointer early on to put QU up 3-2, and Ella Gobald added another jumper to maintain the one-point lead.
 
The Cardinals answered with an 8-2 run to end the first quarter, taking a 12-6 lead.
 
The Hawks fought back in the second quarter. Alexa Low knocked down two free throws in the first minute to get the scoring started. QU later pulled within one thanks to another deep three from Lantz.
 
The Cardinals stretched their lead back to six at 19-13, but QU picked up the defensive pressure after that. The visiting team only allowed three points in the final 4:34 seconds of the half. Alexa Low made her presence known around the basket, tallying a game-high six blocks.
 
Aleksandra Petrovic and Jessica Merino each scored a layup in the final forty-five seconds to make it a one-possession game heading to halftime.
 
WJC held a 22-21 lead at the break.

2nd Half
Quincy kept the momentum going, outscoring WJC 19-9 in the third quarter.
 
The Hawks took the lead with 7:14 remaining in the third after Grace Schraufnagel found Ella Gobald for another three-pointer. QU led 26-24 and never relinquished that lead the rest of the way.
 
QU extended their lead to nine, 35-26, after back-to-back buckets from Jessica Merino and Laney Lantz. That difference stood going into the fourth quarter, with the Hawks ahead 40-31.
 
The Cardinals cut the QU lead to four midway through the final quarter, but the Hawks put the game out of reach in the final four minutes.
 
Quincy ended the game on a 14-6 run to seal the 59-47 victory.
