QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team returned home Thursday night (Jan. 30) after two road games this past weekend. The Hawks faced off with William Jewell, but the Cardinals swarmed the Hawks by forcing 27 turnovers in the contest. Quincy fell by a final score of 65-54.
How It Happened
The Cardinals gained the early lead behind three 3-pointers in the first four minutes. William Jewell opened the game on a 9-2 run.
Quincy (6-13, 2-9 GLVC) struggled to get going on offense, yet trailed by only six points after the first quarter, 16-10.
Laney Lantz started the second quarter with a pair of free throws to get the Hawks within four.
Dami Adeyinka and Lantz each made a pair of free throws in the next minute and a half to make it a two-point game, 18-16.
William Jewell pulled ahead behind a 10-0 run over the next four minutes. This gave the Cardinals a 28-16 lead as 4:06 remained in the first half.
The Hawks were outscored 21-11 in the second quarter and found themselves down 37-21 at the break.
In the second half, Quincy managed to outscore the Cardinals, but were not able to recapture the lead.
Jewell's lead grew to 21 points in the third quarter, but
Dami Adeyinka cut the deficit to twelve with a layup with 1:17 left in the third quarter.
Going into the fourth quarter, QU followed Jewell 47-32.
Quincy began the final quarter on a 7-2 run which brought the score to 50-39.
Aleksandra Petrovic made a pair of free throws which were followed by a layup from
Jessica Merino to cut the Cardinal lead to 50-43.
In the last 3:26, William Jewell kept QU at bay behind ten made free throws down the stretch. Quincy was not able to get all the way back and fell 65-54.
