ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team traveled down Highway 61 to compete in the Lindenwood Invitational this weekend. Quincy's first matchup was against the University of California San Diego today (Jan. 24) where the Tritons took three straight sets from the Hawks 25-22, 25-13, and 25-20.
How It Happened
The Tritons of San Diego started off the game with a 6-2 run.
Michael Ladner and
Omari Wheeler later slammed down kills to get QU within two points as the score moved to 7-5.
Quincy (1-5, 0-0 MIVA) stuck around until San Diego gained their largest lead of the set after a 4-0 run. This four-point run made the Hawks deficit 18-12.
The Hawks made things interesting late after the Tritons reached set-point, 24-17. Quincy rattled off five points in a row to make it a 24-22 score.
San Diego scored the next point to seal the 25-22 set one win.
In set two, the Tritons got on a roll. The California squad hit an impressive 53.6% on their way to a 25-13 set two victory.
Quincy tried to regroup in set three by gaining a 4-3 lead behind a three-point run early on.
The Tritons regained the lead 7-5 before QU once again answered. The Hawks used a 6-1 run to retake the lead in set three behind three attack errors on UCSD and a kill from
Michael Ladner. This gave Quincy an 11-8 lead.
For the next several points, both teams went back-and-forth between the lead and ties. With the score 17-16 favoring QU, San Diego scored five of the next six points to jump ahead 22-18.
This run proved to be the difference as QU fell 25-20 in set three.
