Strong Start Not Enough As Women's Basketball Falls To Bulldogs

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team came out swinging in Monday night's (Jan. 20) GLVC game with Truman State. The Hawks held the lead after the first quarter, but the Bulldogs kept QU at bay behind a strong second and third quarter. Quincy fell by a final score of 64-57.

How It Happened
Ella Gobald and the Hawks came right at the third-ranked team in the GLVC on Monday night. Gobald scored eight of the team's first twelve points as the Hawks held a 12-8 lead with 3:53 remaining.

Quincy had an answer for all of Truman's baskets in the first quarter, and held the lead for the entire first ten minutes. The Bulldogs got a basket with twenty seconds left in the quarter to make the score 14-12 going into the second.

In the second quarter, TSU turned up the offense. The Bulldogs shot just 27% from the field in quarter one, but flipped the script by making over half (52%) of their shots in quarter number two.

After Quincy got a three-pointer by Jessica Merino to start off the second, Truman made a 5-0 run to tie the score at 17-17.

Two minutes later, the Bulldogs captured their first lead of the game after a shot from beyond the arc made it 20-19 TSU.

Marta Rivera answered back with a three-pointer to give QU the lead back at 22-20.

Over the next two and a half minutes, Truman State went on an 11-0 run which turned the tides of the momentum before halftime. This run gave the visitors a 31-22 lead with 2:49 left in the first half.

QU was able to cut the deficit to seven after Aleksandra Petrovic scored on a jumper with 38 seconds left in the first half. Truman was able to push their lead to double figures with a made three-pointer with under ten seconds before the break.

The Hawks trailed 38-28 at the half.

Following the break, Truman scored the first two baskets which increased their lead to fifteen points, 43-28.

Midway through the third quarter Alexa Low cut the Truman lead to eight points when her jump shot in the paint brought the score to 47-39.

The Bulldogs maintained control by ending the third on a 7-2 run. After three quarters, Quincy trailed 54-41.

QU outscored Truman in the fourth quarter, but could not get close enough to overtake the lead. Twice the Hawks cut Truman's lead to just six points, but they could not get closer.
