QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's basketball team dropped their first home game of the season to Truman State, 84-70, on Monday night (Jan. 20). QU won nine straight games in the friendly confines of Pepsi Arena prior to tonight. The Hawks shot 48.1% from the floor and were 5-for-19 from behind the arc. Truman hit 55.7% of their shots, and did their damage in the paint where they scored 52 points.
How It Happened
1st Half
Quincy jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the first two minutes of Thursday's contest after back-to-back buckets from
Tanner Stuckman and a three-pointer by
Austin Downing.
The Bulldogs responded quickly with a 4-0 run, capped off by a fast break dunk from the GLVC's leading scorer Brodric Thomas.
The Hawks never regained the lead in the first half. Truman extended their lead to as many as twelve at 32-20 with 9:35 remaining.
Quincy did not back down, pulling back within single digits after Downing slashed into the paint and nailed a jumper.
Viktor Kovacevic followed with a driving layup of his own to make the score 32-26.
The Bulldogs built a slight cushion before the half, using a tip-in layup just before the buzzer to make the score 46-36 heading into the locker room. Thomas led all scorers at the break with 19 points.
2nd Half
Austin Downing gave the Hawks life coming out of intermission. The redshirt junior guard from Atchison, Kansas hit back-to-back jumpers to open the second, quickly cutting the TSU lead in half.
Less than a minute later, Downing found
Aziz Fadika for a layup to keep the the Truman lead at five, 48-43.
The Bulldogs proceeded to go on an 18-5 run and push the differential to eighteen, 66-48.
Quincy put together small runs in the last ten minutes, but the TSU lead was too much to overcome.
Truman won by a final score of 84-70.
