Hawks Drop GLVC Road Contest at Rockhurst

Kansas City, Mo. – Alexa Low and Aleksandra Petrovic combined for 34 points in the first game of the new year for the women's basketball team, but it was not enough as Quincy dropped Thursday (Jan. 2) night's conference matchup to Rockhurst, 72-61. 

How It Happened
1st Half
Quincy came off the holiday break ranked inside the top four in the GLVC in both field goal percentage (4th) and 3-point field goal percentage (2nd). 

The Hawks looked to take advantage of a Rockhurst team that came into the contest allowing a league-high 72.8 points per game. 

In the early going, Alexa Low and Ella Gobald got things rolling for QU. Both players helped score twelve of the first fourteen points. Quincy held an early 14-7 lead halfway through the first quarter. 

After the first ten minutes, the Hawks held a 17-13 lead. 

Four different Hawks scored to begin the second quarter. Aleksandra Petrovic, Alexa Low, Laney Lantz, and Jessica Merino all contributed baskets. 

Quincy held a slim 28-27 lead with under five minutes left before halftime. 

Just before the half, Rockhurst tied the game. Two made free throws by RU tied the score at 33-33 with nine seconds left.

Dami Adeyinka scored before the buzzer to give QU the lead and a little momentum going into the second half. Alexa Low led all Hawk scorers with 11 points in the first twenty minutes. 

2nd Half
Laney Lantz scored the first basket after the intermission to give Quincy a 37-33 lead. 

Rockhurst gained their first lead since the first quarter with 6:42 left in the third. A 4-0 run brought the score to 43-41 RU. Aleksandra Petrovic tied the game shortly after with a layup. 

With 5:29 remaining, RU regained the lead 45-43. This score stood for over three minutes as both teams missed the next eleven shot attempts. 

The Hawks of Rockhurst ended the third quarter on a 6-2 run which allowed them to take a 51-45 lead going into the final quarter. 

Quincy started off the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 51-51. 

With six minutes remaining, Rockhurst gained some distance. RU went on a 9-0 run to give themselves a 65-55 lead. 

This run was a crucial moment in the game as it forced QU to play the last three and a half minutes from behind. 

Jessica Merino knocked in a 3-pointer with 2:22 remaining to cut Quincy's deficit to eight, moving the score to 68-60. 

In the final two minutes, the Hawks scored just one point on a free throw by Alexa Low as Rockhurst won the game 72-61. 

Quincy shot at a higher clip than Rockhurst in the game with a 43.4 field goal percentage compared to RU's 35.1 percent. The difference came on the offensive boards as Rockhurst outgained QU 17-2 for the game in that category.
