QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team fell 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-25) to Campbellsville University in the final match of the River Crossing Tournament Saturday afternoon (Jan. 19).
1st Set
Quincy got behind the eight ball early to open the game. Campbellsville jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two service aces and two attack errors on QU.
The Hawks got three straight points to answer the run by the Tigers with points from
Michael Ladner and
Omari Wheeler.
Campbellsville remained ahead for the majority of the set after gaining the early lead. The Tigers surged ahead 15-9, forcing Quincy to take their first timeout.
QU was unable to make up ground in the second half of the set. CU won the first set 25-19.
2nd Set
Quincy got off on the right foot after dropping set one. Two service aces helped QU build a 6-3 lead to start things off.
The Hawks rode the momentum and stretched their advantage to 11-6 after a kill by freshman
Eddie Jakubauskas.
Campbellsville called a timeout after the Hawks boosted their lead to six points. An attack error on the Tigers gave QU a 14-8 lead.
The Tigers scored three points in a row to cut Quincy's lead to 14-11 which resulted in a QU timeout.
After the timeout, the Hawks remained in control until the end of set two and won by the score of 25-20.
3rd Set
At the start of set three, Campbellsville opened up on a 5-0 run forcing Quincy to take a very early timeout to regroup.
The Tigers continued to push their attack as the lead grew to 7-1.
Despite the deficit, Quincy managed to get back into it with a 7-4 run which made the score 11-8.
Eddie Jakubauskas got a kill followed by two attack errors and a bad set by CU.
Quincy continued to surge when a kill from
Manuel Hernandez and a kill by
Zach Reider brought the score to 13-12. QU tied the set on the next point after a service ace by
Blake Sprecher.
The Hawks got their first lead of the set when an attack error on the Tigers made it 15-14 QU.
Campbellsville went back in front when four straight points gave the Tigers a 19-16 lead. This gave the visitors the distance they needed to take set three. CU went on to win 25-18.
4th Set
Quincy again dug themselves into an early hole at the start of set four. Campbellsville opened up on an 8-1 run to jump ahead of the Hawks.
Gavin Mueller was forced to take an early timeout after his team fell behind 10-2.
QU's deficit grew to double digits after a Campbellsville kill gave them a 16-5 lead.
The Tigers held on to the lead and won the set to take the game with a 25-15 victory.
