Football Downed By Truman In GLVC Opener

QUINCY, IL – The Quincy University football team opened up Great Lakes Valley Conference play against Truman State on Saturday (Sept. 28). The Hawks turned the ball over five times in a 63-14 loss to the Bulldogs.

1st Half
The Hawks started the game on a positive note after Paul Sullivan took the opening kickoff 38 yards into Truman State territory. After a conversion on third and short, the Hawks committed the first turnover of the game. Truman State forced a fumble on first down to gain possession.

The Bulldogs used five plays to go 59 yards to score the first points of the game. An 11-yard touchdown pass gave TSU a 7-0 lead early in the opening quarter.

Both teams ended their next drives with a punt. Quincy got the ball with seven minutes left in the first quarter at their own 20-yard line.

On third down and eight, quarterback Andrew Rund connected with Braden Lowery for a 28-yard gain to move the chains. After an incompletion made it second down, Rund completed a 15-yard pass to his slot receiver Chris Poindexter

Later in the drive, Rund once again created a chunk play with a 20-yard pass to Brandon Gaston setting up first and goal from the 1-yard line. The very next play, Jalen Griffin punched in a run to get the Hawks on the board and tie the game 7-7.

The Bulldogs and QU went three-and-out in the next two drives leaving 1:33 left in the first quarter.

On Truman's first play of their next drive, the Bulldogs scored on a 30-yard strike to move ahead 14-7.

As the second quarter began, the Hawks got into TSU territory. Facing a 4th and three, QU elected to go for it at the Truman 33-yard line.

Andrew Rund's pass was intercepted as two QU receivers collided. Truman took possession at their own 37-yard line.

The Bulldogs marched down the field with a 6-play, 63-yard drive capped off by 19-yard score. Truman upped their lead to 21-7.

TSU caught QU off-guard with an onside kick after the touchdown. Truman recovered the kick and took over near mid-field.

Quincy's defense made a stand as Marvion Harris intercepted a pass to give the Hawks the ball back just three plays after the kickoff recovery by Truman.

As the offense took over, QU went just 21 yards in eight plays and were forced to punt with over eight minutes remaining in the half.

Truman responded from their last drive with a 59-yard rushing score to go up 28-7.

QU was forced to punt on their next drive, but QU's defense responded with another interception. Andrew Houston picked off a TSU pass with less than two minutes left in the first half.

Quincy's offense was unable to cross the goal line before the break as the score stood at 28-7 at halftime.

2nd Half
The Bulldogs received the ball to start the second half. Quincy's defense forced a punt in the opening drive to give the ball to the offense.

Quincy's opening drive of the second half was short-lived after a three-and-out. Truman took over at their own 49-yard line.

Truman responded after being stuffed on their first drive of the half with a nine-play drive. The Bulldogs marched 51 yards with a 9-yard score to go ahead 35-7.

QU's offense came up short on fourth down and one as their next drive stalled at the Truman State 45-yard line. The Bulldogs scored on back-to-back drives bringing the score to 42-7.

In the fourth quarter, the Hawks turned to Trey Mosley at quarterback. The sophomore found Brandon Gaston on his second drive of the game for a 24-yard touchdown. The Hawks trailed 42-14.

Truman added three more scores after two short yardage touchdown runs, and an interception that was returned for a touchdown. With those scores, TSU built a 63-14 lead.

That score stood as the Hawks did not find the end zone in the remainder of the fourth quarter.
