Hawks Come Up Short In Rolla

Box Score ROLLA, MO – The Quincy University football team saw its rally from a two-touchdown deficit come up short as Missouri S&T previaled, 21-13, Saturday afternoon (Hawktober 5).

1st Quarter
The Hawks got the ball to start Saturday's GLVC match up. Quincy's offense looked promising at the start, as Andrew Rund connected with Paul Sullivan twice for gains of ten and fourteen yards.

That momentum soon ended after a pass to Melvin Brock bounced off a shoulder pad and into the arms of the Miners defense. S&T took over at the QU 45-yard line.

Missouri S&T's offense went the distance in six plays to get on the board first. The Miners led 7-0 with over twelve minutes left in the first quarter.

Quincy went three-and-out on their next drive allowing the Miners offense to quickly regain possession. The Miners got into QU territory, but the defense made a stand.

The Hawks forced a fumble on first and ten which was recovered by Sam Mock. The Quincy offense took over at their own 36-yard line.

After two more offensive plays, the turnover battle swung back in favor of the Miners. Andrew Rund was intercepted on 3rd down and six giving S&T the ball near midfield.

Missouri S&T went just three yards in six plays on the drive following the interception. Quincy's special teams made a play on the Miners punt attempt. Will Henegar got a hand on the punt and gave the Hawks good field position on the QU 40-yard line.

Looking to sustain a drive, the Hawks finally got some traction following the tipped punt. QU's offense used a methodical 13-play drive to get within Missouri S&T's five-yard line.

Rund completed a short slant pattern to Brandon Gaston, but the play did not count as there were off-setting penalties on the play. This was no problem for the Hawks, as Jalen Griffin ran into the end zone on the very next play. QU tied the game 7-7.

2nd Quarter
The Miners got the ball back, but Quincy's defense got off the field in five short plays. Norman Oglesby broke through the line on a 4th down and one with tackle for loss to give QU the ball back at the Miners 43-yard line.

Quincy once again used the possession to their advantage. The Hawks ran eight plays and got the ball inside the S&T 10-yard line. After being stopped on 3rd and goal, the field goal unit came on for a 25-yard try. The kick missed wide left and the score remained tied 7-7.

On the next Miners possession, the Hawks defense continued to stymie the home team's offensive attack. After six plays and just nineteen yards, the Miners were forced to punt and give QU the ball back.

Both teams were not able muster a scoring drive in their next possessions and were forced to punt.

With under four minutes in the half, Quincy drove down the field in 12 plays but saw their drive end inside the redone. QU missed another field goal attempt which left the score tied and gave S&T back the ball with 3:15 left before halftime.

The Miners took advantage of the missed field goal and orchestrated a scoring drive just before the intermission. S&T went 80 yards in 11 plays to go ahead 14-7 with under forty seconds left in the first half.

3rd Quarter
Missouri S&T started with the ball in the second half. Quincy's defense got off the field quickly behind a nine-yard sack by David Tabakovic.

Quincy looked to tie things up on their opening drive of the third quarter. Their drive stalled after back-to-back negative plays put QU behind the chains. Nathan Kewney came in to punt and booted a 55-yarder down to the Miners 14-yard line.

On the next Miners drive, Quincy's defense evened the turnover margin after Andrew Houston intercepted a pass at Quincy's 25-yard line.

The Hawks weren't able to get very far before the Miners defensive line got pressure on Andrew Rund and forced a strip sack on a second down play. Missouri S&T recovered the fumble with 6:50 left in the third quarter.

4th Quarter
QU's defense once again held firm and made the Miners attempt a 42-yard field goal after a lengthy drive. The attempt hit the goal post and missed the mark. The score remained 14-7 just fifteen seconds into the final quarter.

After another Quincy punt, the Miners found their rhythm. S&T manipulated an eight-play, 95-yard drive capped off by an 11-yard touchdown run. Missouri S&T led 21-7 with 8:19 left to play.

Trailing by two scores, the Hawks needed to come up with a scoring drive. Andrew Rund gave the Hawks what they needed by orchestrating a 10-play drive capped off by a 4-yard quarterback run. QU's kicking woes continued as the extra point was no good. Quincy trailed 21-13 with 4:35 remaining.

As the Miners got the ball, Quincy's defense needed to make one more quick stop the give QU one last scoring chance. The Miners got 23 yards on a pass play down the middle of the field.

After that, the Hawks defense held the Miners on three straight run plays. Missouri S&T punted back to QU with 2:20 left in the game.

A completion for no gain was followed by another completion, but the Hawks were driven back due to an illegal block penalty.

On third and fourth down, the Hawks could not get a completion as the drive stalled and the Miners took over. With the possession change, Missouri S&T sealed the 21-13 victory.
