QUINCY, IL – The Quincy University women's soccer team looked to beat Bellarmine who defeated them in the GLVC tournament a year ago. A highly defensive battle saw Bellarmine come out on top with a 2-0 win on Friday evening (Sept. 27).
1st Half
Both teams spent most of the first half sizing each other up. Bellarmine was the first to establish offensive traction by rattling off the first three shots of the game. Two of those shots missed wide in the 2nd and 5th minute. A header shot by the Knights sailed high over the net in the 8th minute of play.
Over the next twenty minutes, both teams battled in the midfield without any shots. In the 27th minute, the Knights got a chance.
A ball was played into the box with a plethora of bodies near the ball. Annabelle Moore of Bellarmine gained possession, but fell down while being contested. Before falling, she sent a touch to the right side of the box where a wide open Lauren Mackey awaited. Mackey sent a shot into the right corner of the net to give BU a 1-0 lead.
Quincy's first shot of the game came in the 32nd minute as
Baylee Smith missed the mark just wide. In the 34th and 35th minute,
Lauren Crane and
Paige Anderson were not able to connect on their shot attempts as the score remained 1-0.
The last opportunity of the first half came in the 39th minute as
Jessica Felix ripped a shot, but she missed wide of the post.
2nd Half
Alex Severino was the first to attack in the second half with a shot in the 53rd minute. Her shot also sailed wide of the net.
QU's first shot on goal didn't come uintil the 63rd minute when
Maddie Bauer's header was saved by the Bellarmine goalkeeper.
The Knights showed a flurry of offense with three shots in a minute span. Between the 66th and 67th minute, BU had a shot blocked and two shots miss wide as the score remained 1-0 in favor of the Knights.
In the 72nd minute,
Baylee Smith tested the Bellarmine keeper for only the second time in the game. Smith sent a long shot from outside the goalie box, but the save was made.
The Knights delivered the crucial blow in the 78th minute with a goal by Isabella Zamborini. BU went ahead 2-0 with twelve minutes to play.
Quincy was unable to get another shot off in those remaining twelve minutes as they dropped back-to-back GLVC contests with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Bellarmine.
