KIRKSVILLE, MO - The Quincy University women's soccer team traveled to Truman State for the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener Sunday (Sept. 15) afternoon. The Quincy offense gave the Bulldog defense a lot of work, but the Hawks were unable to find an equalizer and dropped a 1-0 decision.
The Brown & Gold owned the the advantage in shots, 20-11, and corner kicks, 8-4, but Truman State goalkeeper Beth Hopwood made 11 saves to keep Quincy off the board.
The Hawks best chance to score came in the 21
st minute.
Lauren Crane controlled the ball off of a corner kick and hit a rocket toward the bottom left corner. Hopwood stymied the attack by stretching to make the save.
Less than two minutes later, the Hawks were knocking on the door again.
Sydney Gorman sent a free kick into the box and
Mo Rooney broke away from her defender. Rooney managed to get her head on the ball but it sailed just high of the crossbar.
The teams would go into the half deadlocked at 0-0.
Truman State broke the stalemate in the 71
st minute with their second shot of the half. Faith Branson got to the ball during a scramble in the box and found the back of the net to put the Bulldogs up 1-0.
The physical style of play between the two teams picked up down the stretch.
The Hawks lost one of their weapons in the 77
th minute.
Sydney Gorman was given a red card after tracking down a Truman State player on a breakaway which disqualified her for the rest of the match.
Quincy's defense stood firm, not allowing a goal the rest of the way playing one player down.
The Hawks final chance to tie the match came in the 83
rd minute.
Paige Anderson hit her third shot of the game but Hopwood made the save to seal it for the Bulldogs.
This is Truman State's first win against the Hawks since 2016.
