Box Score HAMMOND, IN – The Quincy University men's soccer team battled a feisty Purdue Northwest team on the road and came out victorious in overtime 3-2. Three separate players recorded goals in Thursday's contest.
1st Half
The Hawks came into Hammond to face a Purdue Northwest squad that opened the season with three straight losses. Quincy dropped last year's matchup 2-1 at
Jack Mackenzie Field.
QU started off on the right foot in the opening half. Just four minutes in,
Cole Hayes got the Hawks on the board. The redshirt sophomore buried one in the back of the net off of a pass from
Anthony Christante.
Craig Chisholm followed with a shot in the 9
th minute, but he missed over the crossbar.
In the 15
th minute, PNW found the equalizer. A goal by Matthew Bahena made the score 1-1.
The offensive attack maintained pressure on the Pride defense after a shot by
Anthony Christante in the 21
st minute.
Macker Little gave QU the lead just five minutes later in the game.
Little's 26
th minute goal was assisted by Christante to give Quincy a 2-1 lead. It was
Macker Little's second goal of the season.
For the remainder of the first half, the Pride attack looked to find another game-tying goal. PNW out-shot Quincy 6-0 in the final seventeen minutes of play, but the defense held firm.
Goalkeeper
Adam Whybrow made two saves on the final six shots before halftime. Quincy led 2-1 at the half.
2nd Half
Quincy battled adversity in the second half of the game. The Hawks tried to hold on to the lead with a physical style of play, but they were called for eight fouls in the first fifteen minutes after halftime.
Purdue Northwest managed to send three shots in that span, but all three missed the mark.
In the 67
th minute, the first yellow card of the game was given to Quincy's
Anthony Christante after a hard foul.
The Hawks lost one of their weapons in the 71
st minute of the game. After a shot by PNW,
Cooper Reis was given a yellow followed by a red card which disqualified him for the rest of the match.
The chippy play between both teams continued with Quincy playing a man down.
Cole Hayes and Purdue Northwest's Bahena were given yellow cards in the 79
th minute.
QU's defense nearly evaded the offensive pressure from the Pride in the second half, but PNW tied the game with a goal in the 88
th minute. This sent the game to overtime.
Overtime
The Pride picked up where they left off in the second half. PNW ripped three shots in the opening three minutes of overtime. Two shots missed high, and Whybrow stopped the other.
Six and a half minutes into the overtime period, senior
Justin Armfield received a ball from
Joel McIlroy and delivered the game-winning goal for the Hawks. This was Armfield's first goal since October 18
th of last season against Maryville.
With the win, the Hawks moved to 2-1 on the season as they roll into GLVC play on Sunday.
