Hawks Sweep Truman To Finish Regular Season

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Quincy University softball team ended the regular season on a seven-game win streak after sweeping Truman State Saturday (April 27). The Hawks came back to defeat the Bulldogs 5-4 in game one and won by the same score in game two behind the second complete game in as many days by Sara Demuth.

Play by Play

Game 1

The Hawks fell behind early on in game one. Truman State scored two runs off five hits in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.

Alex DeVaney settled in and held the Bulldogs scoreless in the second.

The home team added another run in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to center field to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Bulldogs.

The Hawks responded in the top of the fourth. Remi Ferguson led off with a double to right center field. Megan Sharpshair plated Ferguson with an RBI double down the left field line to cut the lead to 3-1.

Mac Kenzie Collier came in to relieve DeVaney in the bottom of the frame. The senior went three innings, allowing three runs on eight hits.

Collier made quick work of the fourth inning, only needing nine pitches to sit the Bulldogs down 1-2-3.

QU could not get anything going in the top of the fifth and Truman took advantage. The Bulldogs scored one run off four hits in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 4-1.

The Hawks came storming back in the final two innings. Ferguson reached base on a hit by pitch and Kylie Powers drew a walk to put two runners on for Sharpshair in the top of the sixth.

The junior from Canton, Illinois came to the plate and roped a two-RBI single to left center field to cut Truman's lead to just one at 4-3.

That score stood going into the top of the seventh inning.

Kay Bettendorf stepped into the box with two outs and the bases loaded. The junior first baseman from Ballwin, Missouri came through with a two-RBI double to right center field to give the Hawks a 5-4 lead.

Head coach Carla Passini sent Collier back out in the bottom of the frame to close out the Bulldogs and she did just that. The sophomore right hander forced three fly outs to give the Hawks the game one victory.

Game 2

QU carried that momentum into the second game of the day. Courtney Kernich led off the game with a single to right field and advanced to third on an error by the right fielder.

Remi Ferguson scored Kernich with an RBI sacrifice fly to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead.

Kylie Powers came to bat later in top of the first inning with two runners on and smoked a three-run home run over the left field fence to extend the lead to 4-0.

Sara Demuth kept the Bulldogs off balance in the first two innings, only allowing three hits.

Truman broke through in the bottom of the third, scoring one run off three hits to make the score 4-1.

The Hawks responded in the top of the fourth. Ferguson recorded her third, and most important, hit of the day with an RBI single to put the Hawks up 5-1.

The Bulldogs chipped away in the bottom of the frame. Truman scored two runs off one hit and two QU errors to cut the lead to 5-3.

The home team applied the pressure on the Hawks by scoring another run in the sixth inning to make the score 5-4.

Demuth did not feel the pressure, as she shut the Bulldogs down in the bottom of the seventh to complete the sweep for the Hawks.

This marks the first time Quincy has swept Truman State since the Bulldogs joined the GLVC in 2013.
