QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team dropped both games of their Saturday doubleheader with Lewis University. The Hawks were shut out 11-0 in game one and fell just short in game two by the score of 6-5.
Game 1
The Flyers took advantage of a two-out error by the Hawks in the first inning. An RBI single after the missed fly ball allowed Lewis to take an early 1-0 lead.
In the 2nd inning, a single and a hit by pitch started the inning for Lewis. A ground ball to the right side left men on second and third base with one out.
A strike out in the next at-bat left two outs in the inning, but a chopper up the middle by the next batter allowed both runners to come home as Lewis went ahead 3-0.
The Hawks fell into a deeper hole in the 3rd inning. The Flyers put up three runs behind a three-run homer to right field. Quincy trailed 6-0 going to the bottom half of the inning.
Quincy threatened to get on the board in the home half of the third inning. With a runner on third base and two outs,
Chandler Purcell sent a ball deep to right center. Lewis made the catch at the wall for the third out to keep QU off the board.
Lewis scored another run in the fourth inning after a sacrifice fly. The Flyers extended their lead to 7-0.
QU had runners on first and third in the home half of the inning, but were unable to plate a run.
The Flyers pushed their scoring streak to five consecutive innings. Lewis scored two more runs to extend the lead to 9-0.
Lewis' lead was extended to 10-0 after another run came in during the 6th inning. A solo homer in the top of the 7th made the score 11-0 Lewis.
The Hawks ended up dropping game one 11-0 in seven innings. It was the largest shut-out loss for QU since 2013.
Game 2
The Hawks looked to respond from the first loss in game one. In the top of the first inning, the first three batters reached safely.
Chandler Purcell led off with a single followed by a hit by pitch to Birdsong and a walk of
Michael Nielsen.
Quincy was unable to cash in on the opportunity as the next two batters struck out, and the third out was recorded on a fielder's choice.
Starting pitcher
Nick Stroud looked to continue his solid pitching after the complete game shut-out in his last outing. Stroud retired six straight batters after a lead off single in the first. After two innings of play, the score was 0-0.
Lewis struck first in the top of the third inning. A solo shot to right gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead. It was only the second home run allowed by Stroud in 2019.
The Hawks offense struggled to get much going as they were held to just one hit through four innings. Lewis clung to a 1-0 lead going to the 6th.
In the top of the 6th, Lewis took a 2-0 lead after a one-out RBI single up the middle.
Two more runs scored for Lewis after a throwing error on a play at first base. Stroud's throw got away on a bang-bang play that ended up rolling down the right side in foul territory. The Flyers went ahead 4-0 with one out in the inning.
Karl Hirsch came out of the Hawks' bullpen to try and get out of the jam. Hirsch struck out the first batter he faced to make it two outs in the inning.
A walk loaded the bases, and a single to left field allowed two more runs to come in for the Flyers. They led 6-0.
Quincy finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Chandler Purcell lifted his ninth home run of the season to right field to make the score 6-2.
Cody Birdsong followed Purcell's two-run shot with a double to center field to continue the Hawks' momentum.
Michael Nielsen moved the runner over to third with a ground ball to the first baseman. There were two outs in the inning.
QU was not able to get another run in as they trailed by four runs going to the 6th inning.
Hirsch worked a quick inning in the top of the 6th, and
Lance Logsdon led off the bottom half with a double to get the Hawks going.
Logsdon moved to third after a ground out to the right side, but QU was unable to plate Logsdon as the score remained 6-2.
Karl Hirsch tossed another scoreless frame in the 7th to bring the Hawks back to bat.
Nolan Snyder led things off with a single to right field, and Lewis went to the bullpen.
Quincy once again could not bring in the run. The score remained 6-2 as the game moved to the 8th inning.
The side-winding righty out of Florida threw another zero in the top of the 8th to keep the Hawks within striking distance.
QU's bats looked to make a late push in the bottom of the 8th, but could not muster up a rally. Going into the final inning the score remained 6-2.
In the final at-bat,
Jeff Hightower brought in a run with an RBI single with two outs in the 9th. The Hawks had two runners on with two outs as the score moved to 6-3.
With the tying run at the plate,
Lance Logsdon sent a deep fly ball to right center. The center fielder for Lewis could not make the catch as two runs came in to score. Quincy now trailed by a run with two outs and a runner on third base.
Quincy's comeback was cut short as the Flyers recorded the final out to take both games from the Hawks.
