QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team dropped its fifth consecutive game after an 8-1 loss on Sunday (April 28th) at the hands of Lewis University.
Play By Play
Lewis was the first to strike in the series finale. A one-out RBI single gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.
The Flyers struck again in the top of the 5th inning with a solo home run to left field. The score moved to 2-0 in favor of Lewis.
Quincy's line up struggled to gain any kind of traction in the first half of the game. The Hawks were limited to one hit in the first five innings.
Carter Naughton got things going with a hit in the bottom of the 6th inning. A strike out made it one out in the inning.
Chandler Purcell drew a walk to put runners on first and second.
A pitch in the turf allowed the runners to move into scoring position.
Cody Birdsong plated the first run of the game for the Hawks with a sacrifice fly out to left field. QU trailed 2-1 going into the seventh inning.
In the top of the seventh, head coach
Josh Rabe went to his bullpen. Willie Sanchez came into the game and tossed a 1-2-3 inning.
The Hawks got things started in the home half of the seventh with a one-out single by
Lance Logsdon.
Justin Eads followed with another base hit to put runners on first and third.
In the next at-bat, a pitch got past Lewis' catcher and
Lance Logsdon looked to tie the game. The passed ball rebounded off the backstop right to the catcher in time to tag out Logsdon before he crossed home.
With two outs, a strike out ended the inning, squashing the scoring chance for QU.
In the top of the eighth, a single and two walks left the bases loaded with two outs for Lewis. A walk plated a run and gave the Flyers a 3-1 lead.
In the home half of the eighth inning,
Carter Naughton led off with a walk.
Nolan Snyder followed with a single up the middle leaving two men on with no outs for
Chandler Purcell.
Purcell laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third.
Cody Birdsong was intentionally walked in the next at-bat leaving the bases loaded with one out for
Michael Nielsen.
Nielsen grounded into a 3-6-1 double play which left the score at 3-1 going into the final inning.
Lewis added an exclamation point in their last at-bat. A solo home run to right center gave the Flyers a three run advantage 4-1. The final blow came with a grand slam to left center in the same inning. Lewis moved firmly in control with an 8-1 lead.
That score stood as the Hawks were swept for the first time since 2015.
