Softball Earns Split With Missouri S&T

ROLLA, Mo. - The Quincy University softball team split its doubleheader with Missouri S&T Saturday (April 20). The Hawks fell 8-4 in game one before bouncing back to win game two 6-3.

Play by Play

Game 1

The Hawks started off on the right foot in the first game of the day. Courtney Kernich and Remi Ferguson drew back-to-back full-count walks to put runners on 1st and 2nd.

Morgan Heckman scored both runners with an RBI single to right field to give the Hawks an early 2-0 lead after the top of the first.

The Miners answered in the bottom of the frame. S&T scored two runs off one hit and a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2.

After an exciting first inning, both teams were silent in the next two innings. Sara Demuth sat the Miners down 1-2-3 in the 2nd and 3rd to give the Hawks momentum.

Kay Bettendorf led off the fourth inning by roping a double to right field. Bettendorf later scored on an RBI single from Megan Sharpshair to retake the lead at 3-2.

The Hawks added one more run in the inning on an RBI single from Jessica Poore to go up 4-2.

S&T responded once again in the bottom of the inning. The Miners scored six runs off four hits and two QU errors to take their first lead of the game 8-4.

The Quincy offense only recorded two hits the rest of the game as they were unable to push any more runs across. S&T took game one 8-4.

Game 2

Courtney Kernich set the tone for the Hawks in game two. The sophomore from Mount Olive, Illinois led off the game by launching a home run to center field. QU led 1-0 after one inning of play.

Quincy added to the lead in the top of the second.

Kylie Powers led off the inning with a single. Megan Sharpshair followed by blasting her fifth home run of the season to extend the Hawks lead to 3-0.

Audrey Hermann kept things going by ripping a double to left field. Dana Walsh plated Hermann with an RBI double to right field to make the score 4-0 in favor of QU.

Alex DeVaney kept S&T scoreless through the first three innings, only allowing one hit.

The Miners broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring two runs off three hits to cut the Hawks lead in half at 4-2.

QU responded with a two-out rally in the top of the fifth.

Hermann singled to center field with two down to get things rolling for the Hawks. Jessica Poore followed by hitting an RBI triple to right field to put the visiting team up 5-2.

Ashley Poore followed up by plating her older sister with an RBI single to left field to extend the lead to 6-2.

S&T scored one run off three hits in the bottom of the frame. With a runner in scoring position, DeVaney forced a fly ball to end the inning and limit the damage. QU led 6-3 after five.

Mack Kenzie Collier came in to relieve DeVaney in the sixth. DeVaney went five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits.

The Miners threatened again in the bottom of the sixth. S&T put runners on second and third with just one out. Collier forced a ground ball double play to end the threat and bring the Hawks back to the plate.

QU was not able to get anything going in the top of the seventh as Collier stepped into the circle for the bottom half of the inning.

Collier worked around a lead-off walk to retire the next three S&T batters and give the Hawks the 6-3 victory.
