LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Quincy University softball team dropped a highly competitive doubleheader to Bellarmine University Monday afternoon (Apr. 1). The Knights won 2-0 in game one and held off the Hawks in the finale 4-3.
Play by Play
Game 1
The Hawks came out on the losing end of a pitcher's duel in the first game of the day.
QU's best chance to score came in the top of the first inning.
Kay Bettendorf led off the game with a single through the left side.
Remi Ferguson later singled up the middle to put two runners on with two outs.
Bellarmine ended the Hawks threat with a ground ball to get out of the inning.
Both teams were held scoreless through five innings as
Mac Kenzie Collier threw a gem for QU.Â
Collier allowed only three hits and had three strike outs through five.
The Knights put together three hits in the bottom of the sixth to score two runs and take a 2-0 lead.
That score stood as the Hawks were unable to push any runs across in the top of the seventh.
Game 2
The Knights struck first in game two, scoring one run off two hits in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks responded in the top of the third inning.
Dana Walsh led off the inning with a double to left field and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Katelyn Gratza. Bettendorf drew a walk to put runners on first and third and
Courtney Kernich reached first on a hit-by-pitch to load the bases with two outs.
Morgan Heckman came to the plate and drew an RBI walk on a seven-pitch full count to tie it at 1-1.
Remi Ferguson followed with an RBI hit-by-pitch to give QU a 2-1 lead.
Alex DeVaney came in to relieve
Sara Demuth in the top of the third. Demuth went two innings, allowing one run on three hits and one strike out.Â
Bellarmine tied the game in the bottom of the frame as they scored one run off one hit and two QU errors.Â
The Hawks regained the lead in the top of the sixth.
Megan Sharpshair led off with a single to left field and Gratza followed with a double to left center to put runners on second and third.
Kernich scored Sharpshair with an RBI groundout to give QU a 3-2 lead heading into the final inning.
The Knights thwarted the Hawks comeback, scoring two runs off two hits and a QU error in the bottom of the seventh to take game two 4-3.
