Tritons Take Two From Homestanding Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks softball team lost a nail-biting doubleheader to UMSL on Friday afternoon (Apr. 5). The Tritons won game one 2-0 and took game two 3-2.

Play by Play

Game 1

Both teams were silent through two innings, recording only two hits combined.

Mac Kenzie Collier kept the Tritons scoreless behind three strike outs in 1st and 2nd. Her only blemish of the game came in the third inning in the form of a two-run home run to center field. UMSL led 2-0.

Two runs were all UMSL's starting pitcher, Andee Tiffee, needed. 

The Hawks' offense struggled to get anything going in the first game of the day. Tiffee limited the QU lineup to just three hits in the ball game.

QU was unable to mount a comeback, falling to the Tritons by a final score of 2-0 in game one.

Collier went the distance, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out seven.

Game 2

UMSL was first to strike in game two. The Tritons jumped out to an early lead, scoring one run off two hits and a QU error in the top of the first. UMSL led 1-0.

The Hawks responded in the bottom of the frame.

Kay Bettendorf came to the plate with two outs and launched her second home run of the season over the center field fence to tie the game at 1-1.

Alex DeVaney settled in for QU and threw three scoreless innings in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th. 

The Tritons regained the lead in the top of the fifth with a two-run home run, making the score 3-1.

The Hawks did not go down quietly. Bettendorf roped a two-out double off the the left field fence in the bottom of the seventh to give QU life.

Kylie Powers followed with an RBI double to center field to cut the lead to 3-2 and bring the winning run to the plate.

The Tritons held off the Hawks for the final out and took game two 3-2.
