Hawks Drop Pair To Maryville On Saturday

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday (Apr. 6) against Maryville. The Hawks fell to the Saints 6-3 in game one and 10-4 in game two.

Play by Play

Game 1

Maryville jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a home run to center field in the top of the first.

Sara Demuth settled in and sat the Saints down 1-2-3 in the second. 

The visiting team added one run in the top of the third inning off of a QU error. Maryville led 2-0.

The Hawks answered in the bottom of the fourth. Courtney Kernich reached first on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a Megan Sharpshair single to center field. Sharpshair and Kernich stole second and third, respectively, to put two runners in scoring position.

Audrey Hermann plated both runners with a two RBI single to center field to tie the game at 2-2. 

The Saints regained the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Maryville scored four runs off four hits to take a 6-2 lead.

QU fought back in the bottom of the frame. Hermann led off with a single to center field. Ashley Poore followed by scoring Hermann with an RBI double to right center to cut the lead to 6-3. 

That score stood as the lead was too much for the Hawks to overcome. The Saints recorded the final three outs to win the first game of the day.

Game 2

Both teams were scoreless through the first inning in game two.

The Saints took a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the top of the second.

The Hawks responded in the bottom of the frame. Kylie Powers reached on a throwing error by the third baseman and advanced to second after Sharpshair drew a walk. Ashton Dyche reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. 

Dana Walsh gave QU a 2-1 lead with a two RBI single to center field, scoring Powers and Sharpshair. 

Maryville answered right back in the top of the third. The Saints scored five runs off of five hits to retake the lead at 6-2.

The Hawks cut into the lead in the bottom of the third. Kay Bettendorf led off by roping a home run over the left field fence to make the score 6-3.

Mac Kenzie Collier came in to relieve Alex DeVaney in the top of the fourth. DeVaney went three innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and one strike out.

The Saints extended their lead in the next three innings. Maryville scored four runs off four hits and a QU error in the 4th, 5th, and 6th to take a 10-3 lead heading into the final inning. 

Bettendorf led off the bottom the of seventh by launching her second home run of the game, and fourth of the season. 

The Hawks were unable to push any more runs across as Maryville took game two 10-4.
