QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team got back in the win column with a straight set victory over Culver-Stockton on Saturday night (March 9). The Hawks downed the Wildcats 25-22, 25-14, 25-14.
1st Set
The first set was played neck-and-neck by both teams. Quincy secured an early 4-2 lead after kills from four different QU players.
Omari Wheeler,
Jacob Sheets,
Brendon Estrada, and
Blake Sprecher got in on the action early.
The Wildcats countered with three straight points to take a 5-4 lead. The Hawks answered right back with a three point run to regain the advantage 7-5.
Neither team was able to obtain a lead larger than two points until QU scored three straight points later in the set.
Jacob Sheets added another kill to push Quincy's lead to 20-16.
The Hawks remained in the driver's seat despite a late push by Culver to take a 25-22 set one win.
2nd Set
The second set looked to be another close match. Both teams sat tied 4-4 after a kill by the Wildcats.
Quincy scored six in a row to gain some separation early in the set. CSC tallied four attack errors to fuel the point swing by QU. The score favored the Hawks 10-4.
Midway through set two, Quincy remained ahead 15-10. Culver-Stockton was not able to get closer than four points as the Hawks won set two in commanding fashion 25-14.
3rd Set
The Wildcats used an early three point run to gain a 5-4 lead over the Hawks.
Omari Wheeler and
Matt Friddle answered with a pair of kills that gave QU the lead 6-5.
Adam Rogan sniped a service ace to give Quincy a 10-8 lead shortly after. After a point by CSC made the score 10-9, the Hawks pulled away.
Quincy rattled off seven straight points which helped extend their lead to 17-9. Wheeler had two kills during the swing.
Ben Rachilla added a kill during another run to seal the win for the Hawks. Four straight points brought the score to 24-12, and Quincy won the third set 25-14.
