Hawks Take #13 Ball State To Four Sets On Senior Night

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team took No. 13 Ball State to four sets on Saturday night (Mar. 30). The Cardinals claimed the 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 25-15 win over the Hawks in MIVA action.

Play by Play 

1st Set

The Hawks jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the opening set behind an Adam Rogan service ace and two kills from Omari Wheeler and Brendon Estrada.

QU stretched the lead to six before the Cardinals went on a run, scoring seven of nine points to cut the lead to 11-10. Ball State later used back-to-back points to take their first lead of the match at 17-16.

The Hawks responded as Wheeler slammed home a kill to tie the score.

The Cardinals went on a three point run to their largest lead of the set at 20-17. This would prove to be the difference as Ball State took the first set 25-22.

2nd Set

QU evened the score in the second set.

The Hawks used kills from Stevie Bresser, Jacob Sheets, and Estrada to once again jump out to an early 11-7 lead.

Quincy maintained this lead with another Rogan service ace and kills by Estrada and Blake Sprecher. The Hawks led 15-11. 

The Cardinals scored four of the next five points to cut the lead to one at 16-15.

The Hawks never relinquished the lead as the second set stayed close down the stretch. Two kills by Bresser and Sheets allowed the Hawks to pull away and take the second set 25-23.

3rd Set

Both teams continued to compete closely as the score sat tied at 9-9 early in the third set.

Ball State scored seven of the next nine points to take a 16-11 lead, forcing a QU timeout.

The Hawks used three Cardinal errors to pull within three at 20-17.

The deficit proved to be too much to overcome for the Hawks as Ball State hung on to take the third set 25-20.

4th Set

Ball State took momentum into the fourth set as they grabbed a 6-3 lead early on.

The Hawks came roaring back, using kills from Sprecher, Rogan, and Estrada to cut the Cardinal lead to 8-7.

Ball State scored nine of the next 14 points to stretch their lead to 17-12. 

The Hawks were unable to draw any closer as the Cardinals won the fourth set 25-15 and took a 3-1 victory.
