QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team fell to No. 15 Purdue Fort Wayne in MIVA play on Friday night (Mar. 29). The Hawks lost in straight sets to the Mastodons 25-12, 25-21, 25-23.
Play by Play
1st Set
The Mastodons jumped out to an early 6-3 lead in the opening set before QU went on a four point run.
The Hawks used a service ace by
Brendon Estrada and a
Blake Sprecher kill to take a 7-6 lead.
Fort Wayne answered by winning five of the next six points to re-take the lead at 11-8 and force a QU timeout.
The timeout could not thwart the Mastodons momentum as they went on to take the first set 25-12.
2nd Set
Both teams traded points early in the second set before Fort Wayne used back-to-back kills to take a 9-6 lead.
The Hawks battled back with kills from Sprecher and
Jacob Sheets to pull within two at 16-14.Â
The Mastodons tried to pull away as they took a 21-16 lead late in the set.
QU did not go quietly. The Hawks used an Estrada service ace to go on a three point run and cut the lead to 22-19.
The Hawks could not draw any closer as Fort Wayne scored three of the last five points to take the second set 25-21.
3rd Set
The Hawks came out firing in the third set. QU took an early 6-5 lead behind kills from Estrada, Sprecher, and
Omari Wheeler.
Both teams continued to go back and forth as the score sat tied at 12-12 midway through the set.
The Hawks used back-to-back kills by Wheeler and a perfectly placed serve by Estrada to take a 17-16 lead.
The Mastodons would answer by scoring five of the next seven points to re-take the lead at 21-19.Â
QU would use an Estrada kill to cut the lead to one at 24-23.
This is as close as the Hawks would get as Fort Wayne stole the final point to win the third set 25-23 and take a 3-0 victory.
