KISSIMMEE, Fl. - The Quincy University softball team split its last doubleheader in Florida with Dominican College and Post University on Tuesday (Mar. 12). The Hawks rolled past the Chargers 4-2 before falling to the Eagles 6-2.
Game 1
The Hawks came out swinging early in game one.
Kay Bettendorf got things started with a single to center field.
With two outs,
Morgan Heckman scored Bettendorf with a triple down the right field line to take a quick 1-0 lead.
Alex DeVaney was able to keep the lead in tact after recording a strike out in the bottom of the inning to get out of a bases loaded jam.
QU would strike again in the fourth inning. Heckman would tally her second hit of the game with a single to right field.Â
Megan Sharpshair provided a timely RBI double with two outs to score Heckman and extend the Hawks lead to 2-0.
The Hawks kept the momentum with two more runs in the top of the sixth.
Courtney Kernich reached base on an error by the first baseman and advanced to third on a Bettendorf bunting single.Â
Bettendorf stole second on the next pitch to put runners on 2nd and 3rd.
Heckman would get on base for the third time after an error by the shortstop, which allowed Kernich to score. QU now led 3-0.
Later in the inning,
Kylie Powers hit a sacrifice line drive to the right fielder, scoring Bettendorf to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead.
DeVaney would hold the Chargers scoreless until the sixth inning when they would score two runs in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 4-2.
Sara Demuth would come into the game in relief with two outs and retire the next batter with two pitches to get the Hawks out of the inning.
Demuth sat Dominican down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to record her first save of the season and give the Hawks a 4-2 victory.
Game 2
Morgan Tanksley used two strikeouts to put the Eagles away 1-2-3 to start the game.
Both teams would remain scoreless through the first inning of play.
Post would strike first in the top of the second. The Eagles scored two runs on three hits before
Mac Kenzie Collier came in to relieve Tanksley.
The next three batters would hit back-to-back-to-back singles to extend the lead to 6-0. Demuth would come in for the second pitching change of the inning and proved to be the Eagles kryptonite as she held them scoreless for the remainder of the game.Â
The Hawks tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Remi Ferguson led things off with a single and advanced to third on a throwing error.
Kernich would reach first on an error by the catcher, which allowed Ferguson to score from third to cut the lead to 6-1.
After Bettendorf reached on a fielder's choice, QU would load the bases with a Heckman walk and a single by Powers.
Jessica Poore plated Bettendorf with a two out RBI single to right field, making the score 6-2.
QU was unable to get any closer as they fell in game two 6-2.
