Hawks Unlucky On St. Patrick's Day

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team fell twice to Rockhurst University Sunday (Mar. 17) in their GLVC home-opening doubleheader. The Hawks fell 3-1 and 7-0 to Rockhurst.

Play by Play

Game 1

The Hawks fell behind early as Rockhurst plated a run in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead.

Alex DeVaney threw a scoreless second inning before Rockhurst added another run in the third to extend the lead to 2-0.

RU added to their lead again in the fourth, using two hits and a QU error to make the score 3-0.

Sara Demuth came in to relieve DeVaney in the top of the fifth inning and threw three scoreless innings.

DeVaney went four innings, allowing three runs on five hits.

Looking for a last inning comeback, the Hawks came out firing in the bottom of the seventh.

Morgan Heckman led off with deep home run to right field to cut the lead to 3-1.

The score would stand as Rockhurst retired the next three QU batters.

Game 2

Rockhurst used a two-run homer in the top of the first to jump out to a 2-0 lead.

Mac Kenzie Collier forced a ground ball and recorded a strikeout to keep Rockhurst scoreless in the second.

RU capitalized on three hits in the top of the third inning to extend their lead to 3-0.

The Hawks best chance to score came in the bottom of the frame.

Megan Sharpshair led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on an Audrey Hermann single. With two runners on and one out, QU could not push a run across as a double play ended the threat.

Morgan Tanksley came into the game in the fourth and sat Rockhurst down 1-2-3.

Collier went three innings, allowing three runs on five hits and two strikeouts.

Rockhurst plated three more runs on four hits in the top of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 6-0.

Demuth came back in relief in the top of the sixth. Rockhurst scored one run before Demuth forced a ground ball double play to end the inning. This made the score 7-0.

The Hawks were unable to get anything going in their final two at-bats and fell 7-0 in game two.
