Hawks Get First GLVC Win In Split With Cardinals

QUINCY, Ill. - THe Quincy University softball team split its GLVC doubleheader against William Jewell Monday afternoon (Mar. 18). The Hawks fell in game one 9-2 before turning around and defeating the Cardinals by the same score in game two.

Play by Play 

Game 1


The Cardinals scored quickly in the first three innings. William Jewell plated two runs to take an early 2-0 lead after the top of the third. The Hawks responded in the bottom of the frame.

Dana Walsh cut the lead in half with a solo home run to deep center field, making the score 2-1.

William Jewell used two hits and a QU error in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 4-1.

The Hawks responded once again in the bottom of the frame. Kay Bettendorf hit a lead-off home run to deep center field to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Sara Demuth threw a scoreless fifth inning to get the Hawks back to the plate.

QU threatened in the bottom of the fifth with bases loaded and one out. A pitching change by William Jewell proved successful as they retired the last two batters to keep the lead intact.

The Cardinals used a grand slam home run in the sixth to double their lead to 8-2. William Jewell added another insurance run in the seventh to make the score 9-2.

The Hawks were unable to cut into the lead in the bottom of the inning and fell 9-2 in game one.

Game 2

The Hawks bounced back quickly in game two. Alex DeVaney sat the Cardinals down 1-2-3 to bring the Hawks to the plate in the first inning.

Bettendorf reached base on an error and advanced to third on a Walsh double to right center field. Remi Ferguson plated Bettendorf with an RBI single to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

Ferguson stole second on the next pitch to put two runners in scoring position for Megan Sharpshair.

Shaprshair reached second on a William Jewell error that allowed Walsh to score, extending the lead to 2-0.

Katelyn Gratza kept the scoring going with two outs as she singled to left field to score Ferguson and Sharpshair. QU led 4-0 after one.

William Jewell answered with a two-run home run in the top of the second to cut the lead to 4-2.

The Hawks stayed hot in the bottom of the third inning. QU loaded the bases with one out after singles from Kylie Powers, Morgan Heckman, and Gratza. 

All three base runners advanced on a wild pitch allowing Powers to score, extending the lead once again to 5-2.

Ashton Dyche cleared the bases with an RBI single down the right field line scoring Heckman and Gratza. QU now led 7-2.

Ashley Poore tallied the Hawks fifth single in a row as she advanced Dyche into scoring position. Bettendorf came to the plate and ripped an RBI double to right center field, scoring Dyche and advancing Poore to third.
The Hawks lead sat at 8-2.

The Hawks added one more run after Walsh plated Poore with a deep sacrifice fly to center field, making the score 9-2. This marked the first time this season every player in the lineup scored a run.

DeVaney threw five scoreless innings to end the game as the Hawks defeated the Cardinals 9-2 in game two.
