Box Score 2 INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Hawks softball team split its doubleheader with #20 Indianapolis Saturday (Mar. 23). The Hawks fell 7-4 in game one before bouncing back and defeating the Greyhounds 5-4 in game two.
Play by Play
Game 1
After a scoreless opening inning, the Hawks were first to strike in the bottom of the second.Â
Audrey Hermann reached on a fielder's choice with two outs.
Dana Walsh followed with a walk to put runners on first and second.
Ashton Dyche reached first on an error by the short stop, which allowed Hermann to score. QU led 1-0.
The Greyhounds responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs on four hits and a QU error. This gave Indianapolis a 3-1 lead.
Indianapolis added a three-run homer with one out in the third inning to extend the lead to 6-1.
Morgan Tanksley came in to relieve
Alex DeVaney and recorded the last two outs to get out of the inning.
DeVaney went 2 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and one strike out.
The Greyhounds pushed another run across in the fourth to make the score 7-1.
The Hawks fought back in the top of the sixth inning.
Kay Bettendorf led off with a single to center field and advanced to second on a
Katelyn Gratza single.
Morgan Heckman plated Bettendorf and advanced Gratza to third with an RBI single down the left field line. Gratza later scored on a
Kylie Powers RBI ground out, which cut the Greyhound lead to 7-3.
Hermann kept the two out rally going as she drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Heckman scored on an RBI single by Walsh to make the score 7-4.
The Hawks were unable to add any more runs in the final two innings as they fell to the Greyhounds 7-4 in game one.
Game 2
The Hawks played from behind in the second game of the day. The Greyhounds scored first in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Both teams remained silent for the next two innings.
Sara Demuth kept Indianapolis at bay, allowing only three hits through four innings.
The Greyhounds used two hits and two QU errors to extend the lead to 3-0 in the fifth.
QU responded in top of the seventh. Walsh started things off by reaching first on a hit by pitch. Dyche used a pinch-hit walk to advance Walsh to second. After
Megan Sharpshair came in to pinch-run for Dyche, Bettendorf singled to left field to load the bases with two outs.
Quincy used a go-ahead grand slam by Gratza to take a 4-3 lead.
Indianapolis answered with one run in the bottom of the seventh to tie it at 4-4 and force extra innings.
The Hawks were held scoreless in the top of eighth inning and Demuth forced three ground balls in the bottom of the frame to send it to the ninth.
Hermann led off the ninth with another go-ahead home run to center field, giving QU a 5-4 lead.
Mac Kenzie Collier came into the game in the bottom of the ninth and recorded the final three outs to give QU the victory.
