Hawks Sweep Rockhurst With Home Run In Game One; Balk-Off In Game Two

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team swept Rockhurst University with two walk-off wins in Monday's doubleheader. Quincy won 4-3 in 11 innings in game one, and the Hawks won by the same score in seven innings in game two.

Game 1
The Hawks were the first to strike in the first game of the day. Michael Nielsen led off the 2nd inning with a double to left field. In the next at-bat, Jeff Hightower was hit by a pitch to put runners on 1st and 2nd base.

A wild pitch allowed both runners to advance one spot. Lance Logsdon batted in a run with a ground ball to the second basemen as QU took a 1-0 lead.

Cole Evans followed with a single to center which scored Hightower to make it a 2-0 game.

Rockhurst got on the board in the 4th inning. After two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases, a sacrifice fly to right field made the score 2-1 QU. That score remained until the bottom of the 6th.

In the home half of inning number six, senior Cody Birdsong led off with a blast to left field which gave Quincy a 3-1 advantage.

After six innings, starting pitcher Nick Stroud was replaced by the bullpen. Stroud tossed six innings allowing just one run on three hits with eight strikeouts.

In the 7th inning, Rockhurst got the first two batters on base with singles. With men on 1st and 3rd, Quincy was able to turn a double play, but the runner from 3rd scored to make the score 3-2 QU.

Rockhurst tied the game an inning later. A lead off single followed by a fielder's choice at first put a man on 2nd with one out.

The visiting team was able to tie when a single through the left side allowed the runner from 2nd base to come home. QU limited the damage as the score sat tied 3-3.

Quincy stranded runners on 1st and 2nd in the bottom of the 9th to send the game into extras.

Relief pitcher Jack Widhalm came into the game and tossed scoreless frames in the 10th and 11th innings to keep the Hawks tied.

QU broke through in the 11th. Freshman Lance Logsdon led off the inning and decided to end the game with a walk-off solo home run to right field. It was his second home run on the year. Widhalm was credited the win.

Game 2
With the long duration of game one, both teams capped the series with a seven inning series finale. Starting pitcher Aaron Stone cruised through the first three innings of game two without letting up any runs.

Rockhurst scored first in the top of the 4th. RU strung together three straight singles with one out to give themselves a 1-0 lead.

The visitors added another run in the 6th inning. The lead off man was hit by a pitch, and a sacrifice moved the runner to second base.

A wild pitch put a man on 3rd with one out. Rockhurst used good situation hitting by placing a ground ball to the right side to score the man from 3rd. RU held a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom half, Quincy's bats woke up. Carter Naughton led off the inning with a single. Chandler Purcell was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat to put two runners on.

Nolan Snyder placed a bunt down the third base line that advanced the runners on a sacrifice.

Second basemen Cody Birdsong delivered a one-out double to left center which scored Naughton. QU trailed 2-1.

With Purcell on third base and one out, Jeff Hightower brought him in with a sacrifice fly to left field to tie the score 2-2.

In the top of the 7th, Rockhurst led off with back-to-back singles. A fielder's choice in the next at bat, put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out.

Aaron Stone was relieved by Jeff Hightower who had been the designated hitter in game two.

A single by Rockhurst after the change loaded the bases. In the next at-bat, a fielder's choice to first base allowed the runner from 3rd base to score and give Rockhurst a 3-2 lead.

Hightower got the next man out to send the game to the bottom of the 7th.

Quincy got things going early in the inning. A lead-off walk to Cole Evans followed by a double down the right field line by TJ Tamaccio gave QU a prime scoring chance with nobody out.

Carter Naughton tied the score with a single through the left side to plate Evans.

Chandler Purcell drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Two fielder's choice plays at the plate stopped QU from scoring the winning run, but left the bases loaded with two outs.

Jeff Hightower came to the plate, but before the first pitch, a balk was called by the home plate umpire. This allowed the winning run to score and seal the three-game sweep of Rockhurst.
