QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team faced the Peacocks of Upper Iowa on Tuesday (March 12) in doubleheader action. The Hawks won game one 7-6 but fell in game two 10-6.
Game 1
Upper Iowa was the first to plate a run in the seven inning contest. An RBI double by the Peacocks put them ahead 1-0.
Quincy answered that score in the bottom half of the 1st.
Cody Birdsong parked a two-out home run to left field which notched the score 1-1.
The Peacocks led off the next inning with a home run to left to quickly regain the lead 2-1. The next batter doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. A single through the left side allowed another run to come home for Upper Iowa. UIU led 3-1.
In the bottom of the 2nd,
Carter Naughton scored
Jacob Kalusniak on a RBI single to right center. QU trailed 3-2.
Upper Iowa pulled ahead in the top of the 4th inning. The Peacocks scored three runs to take a 6-2 lead, and the Hawks were unable to answer in the bottom half.
The score remained until the bottom of the 6th. With the bases loaded,
Chandler Purcell singled to right field which brought in
Joe Roscetti and
Lance Logsdon. Quincy still trailed 6-4.
The Peacocks were held scoreless in the top of the 7th as the Hawks came to bat in the final inning down two runs. Relief pitcher
Andrew Grieshaber tossed four innings of scoreless relief to keep the Hawks in the ball game.
In the final inning, QU got their first two batters on base after a double from
Cody Birdsong and a single by
Michael Nielsen.
Cole Cimarolli came in to pinch run for Nielsen and quickly stole second base.
Logsdon drew a walk to load the bases with nobody out in the inning. In the next at-bat, Kalusniak also drew a walk to make the score 6-5 and leave the bases loaded.
Jeff Hightower scored Cimarolli with a sacrifice fly to center field. This tied the score at 6-6. Runners were on 1st and 2nd base with one out.
Joe Roscetti laced a single, but the runner was held up at third.
Carter Naughton walked it off with a SAC fly to left field as Logsdon tagged from third to give QU the 7-6 win. It was their fourth walk-off win in a row.
Game 2
Quincy rode the momentum early into the second game.
Chandler Purcell led off the bottom of the 1st inning with a solo homer to right field. Quincy held an early 1-0 lead.
Upper Iowa tied the score in the top of the 3rd. An RBI double allowed the runner from 2nd base to score, which tied the game 1-1.
The Peacocks added another run in the 4th with an RBI single. Upper Iowa now led 2-1.
Things heated up in the 5th inning. The Peacocks plated two runs in the 5th after starter
Dalton Overstreet was relieved by
John Hurayt. The Peacocks hit a two-out single down the left field line that scored the runners on 2nd and 3rd. This made the score 4-1 UIU.
Quincy answered the punch in the bottom half of the frame. Shortstop
Carter Naughton blasted his first home run of the 2019 season with two men on to tie the score 4-4. Naughton's home run came with two outs.
Upper Iowa regained the advantage in the 7th. The Peacocks scored after a balk allowed the runner at third to come home. The Peacocks went in front 5-4.
In the 8th and 9th innings, Upper Iowa scored five runs to take a commanding 10-5 lead late in the game.
The Hawks tried to mount a comeback after Naughton added a run with a sacrifice fly to make the score 10-6. QU's efforts were not enough as they fell in game two 10-6.
