Hawks Fall In Tight Contest To Lindenwood

QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks men's volleyball battled the Lindenwood Lions for the second time in under a week on Tuesday evening (Feb. 26).  The Hawks fell to the Lions 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 24-26, 10-15) in a MIVA contest. 

Play by Play
1st Set

The Hawks and the Lions opened the match by trading points with QU holding a narrow 4-3 edge over Lindenwood through the match's first seven points.  

With QU leading 6-4, the Lions rattled off three straight points to take their first lead of the game at 7-6.  A service ace for Lindenwood extended its lead to 8-6 over QU forcing the Hawks to take their first timeout of the set.  

A kill by Stevie Bresser ended the Lions 4-0 run immediately out of the Hawks timeout. 

Quincy tied the set at 9-9 after an attack error by Nick Stevenson of Lindenwood.  

After surrendering the lead, Quincy turned the momentum by retaking the lead at 11-10 on another attack error by the Lions.  

A 3-0 run for Lindenwood erased the Hawks 11-10 lead and gave the Lions a 13-11 lead in the opening set.  

The Hawks later answered to take a 19-16 lead over the Lions.  

The Lions were forced to take a timeout in an effort to slow the Hawks momentum.  Out of the timeout, Adam Rogan placed a perfect service ace to give the Hawks 20-16 lead.  

A 3-0 run by Lindenwood trimmed the Hawks lead to 20-19.  Stevie Bresser notched a kill to push the Hawks lead back to two. 

Leading 21-20 over the Lions, Quincy scoring four of the final five points of the set to win the opening set 25-21 over Lindenwood.

2nd Set

The Lions held an early 6-4 lead over QU as the back and forth battle continued in the second set.  

With the Lions leading 8-7 a block by Jacob Sheets and Omari Wheeler tied the set at 8-8. 

Quincy took its first lead of the game at 10-9 following a kill by Wheeler. 

At the midpoint of set two, the Lions held a 13-12 lead over the Hawks and scored the following point to push their lead to 14-12. 

The Lions continued to hold its two point lead with the score reading 18-16 late in the second set.  

Quincy tied the set at 20-20, looking to grab a commanding two set lead over the Lions. 

Two points for the Lions forced head coach Gavin Mueller to take his first timeout of the second set to slow the Lions momentum. 

The Hawks faced set point, a kill by Adam Rogan extend the match as the Hawks trailed 24-23. 

Lindenwood scored the next point to tie the match at one set each.  

3rd Set

The teams continued to be evenly matched with QU holding a 8-5 lead in the early portions of the third set.  

The Lions erased the deficit and tied the set at 10-10, using a pair of kills to even the set.  

Despite dropping the second set, the Hawks weathered the storm and took a 18-14 lead in the third set.  

Quincy pushed its lead to 22-16, using a 4-0 run to gain this advantage.  Lindenwood recorded back to back points to cut the lead to 22-18 but a service error ended the short Lions run.  

The Hawks won the third set by a score of 25-20 to take a 2-1 set advantage over Lindenwood. 

4th Set

Looking to avenge last week's loss to the Lions, Quincy took a 13-11 lead midway through the fourth set.  

The Hawks continued to hold its lead as the teams entered the late stages of the set.  A pair of kills gave the Hawks a 19-16 lead over the Lions.  

After a point for the Lions, Omari Wheeler tallied two emphatic kills to put the Hawks ahead 21-17.  

Trailing 22-18, the Lions scored three straight points to cut the lead to 22-21.  An attack error by the Lions gave the Hawks a 23-21 advantage.  

Omari Wheeler kept his strong outing going with a service ace to give the Hawks match point at 24-21. 

The Lions scored the next six points to win the fourth set 26-24 over QU. 

5th Set

The closely contested matchup was decided in the fifth set between the Lions and the Hawks.  The teams were tied at 4-4 after the set's first eight points.  

Lindenwood took a 8-5 lead midway through the match's final set.  The Lions were able to extend this lead to 10-6, forcing QU to use a timeout.  

The Hawks were unable to overcome the deficit and dropped the final set 15-10.
