QUINCY, Ill. – The Ohio State Buckeyes traveled into town to take on the Hawks in a MIVA conference matchup on Saturday (Feb.16). The Hawks fell 23-25, 19-25, 26-24, and 25-19.
Play by Play
Set 1
Pepsi was rocking at the start of Saturday night's game. Both teams were notched at 3-3 when
Omari Wheeler gave the Hawks their first lead. Wheeler's kill made the score 4-3.
Quincy rattled off six points in a row after being down 3-1 to take a 7-3 lead. Ohio State called an early timeout.
After the timeout, QU stayed in the lead after a blocking error made the score 11-7. The Buckeyes cut the lead to one with three straight points to make the score 11-10. The Hawks called time to try and regain momentum.
QU pushed their lead back to four with three points in a row. The score favored the Hawks 14-10.
Ohio State cut the deficit to one point 17-16 after a QU attack error. A block by the Buckeyes soon tied the score 18-18.
The Hawks trailed late 23-20 before falling in the first set 25-23.
Set 2
Ohio State grabbed the first two points before
Brendon Estrada collected a kill and an attack error tied the score 2-2.
The Buckeyes were able to gain the lead and remained in front for most of the set. The Hawks were able to cut the OSU lead to one multiple times but could not gain the advantage.
The Hawks trailed 18-14 when head coach
Gavin Mueller called timeout to rally his team.
Quincy forced a timeout a few points later when they cut OSU's lead to 22-19.
The Buckeyes remained ahead and took a 2-0 lead in the game by winning set two 25-19.
Set 3
In set three both teams worked an early 2-2 tie. The tie remained after the first ten points and the score sat at 5-5.
Stevie Bresser collected an early kill in set three to bring the score to 6-6.
Ohio State pushed ahead 11-8 later in the set after back-to-back points. The Hawks countered with a pair of scored to make it a one-point game again 11-10.
The Hawks came back and worked a tie after a kill by
Blake Sprecher and a service error brought the tally to 14-14.
The Hawks rallied with three in a row to take an 18-17 lead. Ohio State called timeout.
Out of the timeout, Quincy scored two more points to extend the lead to 20-17, and the Buckeyes used their last timeout of the set to try and stop QU's rally.
It did not take long for the Buckeyes to tie the score at 20-20 after two straight scores. The Hawks went back in front 23-21 with a kill by Estrada and a service error.
The Buckeyes tied the score 23-23, but
Stevie Bresser spiked a kill to give QU the 24-23 lead.
The Hawks won the third set 26-24 to force a fourth set.
Set 4
Quincy rode the momentum wave from the set before. QU got out to a 10-7 lead after a kill by Bresser. OSU's coach called an early timeout.
The Buckeyes were able to work back in the game and tied the score 11-11.
Ohio State forced a timeout by QU when they went ahead 16-14.
The Buckeyes quickly made the Hawks take their final timeout when they pushed their lead to 19-15.
Quincy scored back-to-back points on a service error and a block by
Blake Sprecher. Ohio State scored the next point, but served into the net on the next point to make the score 20-18.
The Hawks dropped set four 25-19 to get the victory.
