QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team dropped a highly competitive match to McKendree on Thursday Night. The Hawks fell 25-23, 25-27, 18-25, and 25-27.
Play by Play
1st Set
A highly contested battle began evenly. Both teams were notched at 5-5 after ten points.
Brendon Estrada and
Blake Sprecher had kills while
Stevie Bresser collected a quick pair of kills.
Neither team could gain leverage over the other as the score remained tied at 10-10.
With the score notched at 18-18, the Hawks were able to gain some separation. Three straight points gave the Hawks a 21-18 lead. QU was able to withstand the Bearcats the rest of the way to hold on for the 25-23 first set win.
2nd Set
In set two, the Bearcats came out firing jumping ahead 4-1. Head coach
Gavin Mueller called an early timeout to refocus his team. His team responded. The Hawks scored three straight to tie the score 4-4.
Quincy kept the momentum and took a 8-6 lead after another 3-0 run.
The Hawks kept rolling after a 4-0 run gave QU a 13-9 lead.
Stevie Bresser and
Omari Wheeler had kills during the run.
McKendree was forced to call another timeout after the Hawks pulled ahead 17-11, but the Bearcats made things interesting when they cut the Hawk's lead to 23-22.
The score was quickly tied 24-24 after a kill by McKendree. The Bearcats completed the comeback with a 27-25 win.
3rd Set
The third set began as the two before it. Both teams found themselves tied 5-5.
McKendree scored three straight to move in front 8-5.
Omari Wheeler slammed a kill to get the Hawks back on track.
The Bearcats remained in front and extended the lead to 17-10. QU called a timeout. After the quick break, McKendree remained in control of the set.
Quincy was able to make a run and cut into McKendree's lead. Four straight points by the Hawks made the score 20-16. The Bearcats answered with back-to-back points to go up 22-16.
McKendree went up two sets to one after a 25-20 win in the third set.
4th Set
Omari Wheeler collected his 13th kill of the match which tied the score 5-5 early in set four. Wheeler contributed in more ways than one when he also tallied a service ace to put QU ahead 10-8.
At the half way point in the set, the score was tied 13-13. McKendree went ahead 16-13 after three straight points.
The Hawks attempted to recover. An attack error and service error on the Bearcats put QU down one 16-15.
Jacob Sheets tied the score with his ninth kill in the game. The Bearcats moved back ahead 20-18, but
Omari Wheeler tied the score back at 20 each with another service ace.
Quincy regained the lead on a block by
Blake Sprecher. The score was 22-21 as McKendree called time out.
The score was tied at 24-24. McKendree got a kill to force game point.
Omari Wheeler kept the Hawks alive with another kill to tie at 25. McKendree got the next point.
McKendree won the set 27-25 and won the game 3-1.
