ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team dropped its match to Missouri Baptist on Wednesday (Jan. 23). The Hawks lost 3-1 (16-25, 21-25, 25-22, 16-25) to the Spartans.
Play by Play
1st Set
QU fell behind early in the opening set, trailing 6-4 through the first 10 points of the set.
With QU trailing 10-8, Missouri Baptist scored five straight points to take a 15-8 lead. The Hawks committed a pair of service errors during the 5-0 run.
The Hawks struggled on offense in the first set, hitting -.133. QU committed six attack errors on 15 total attacks.
Missouri Baptist used its early lead to secure a 25-16 first set win.
2nd Set
The Spartans and Hawks traded points throughout the early portion of set two. Missouri Baptist held an 8-7 lead before the Spartans took control of the second set.
The Spartans scored eight of the next 12 points to grab a 16-11 lead over QU.
Quincy responded with a run of their own. A 4-0 run cut the Spartans lead to 16-15. Kills by
Jacob Sheets and
Stevie Bresser led the Hawks on their comeback.
The Spartans remained composed and used a 4-1 run to take a 20-16 lead late in the second set.
Trailing 22-17, the Hawks cut the lead to one following a 4-0 run.
Missouri Baptist scored the set's final three points to win the set 25-21 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
3rd Set
The Hawks would be forced to win the third set to extend the match to a fourth set.
QU fell behind early, trailing 7-5.
The Hawks scored the set's next four points behind a pair of kills by
Omari Wheeler.
QU extended its lead to 17-13 late in the third set.
Missouri Baptist seemed determined to sweep the Hawks, scoring the next five points to take a 18-17 lead in the third set.
The Hawks trailed 22-19 and were on the verge of a sweep.
Quincy scored six straight points to take the third set 25-22. The Hawks took advantage of three Spartan attack errors during the final run.
4th Set
Quincy looked to send the match to a decisive fifth set.
Tied at 4-4, the Hawks and Spartans traded points until the score read 14-13 in favor of Missouri Baptist.
A 5-1 run gave Missouri Baptist a strong 19-14 lead.
The Hawks were unable to respond and dropped the fourth set 25-16.
Missouri Baptist tallied 14 kills in the fourth set to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead.
