Baseball Takes Series From UMSL With Saturday Sweep

QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks baseball took the weekend series 3-1 over the University of Missouri-St. Louis Saturday (Apr. 7).  The Hawks won both games 8-0 over the Tritons. 

Play by Play:

Game 1
Both teams were held in check until the top of the fourth inning.  Brynn Martinez, Cody Birdsong, and Troy Wehde all reached base to lead off the inning. 

JC DeMuri walked to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.  Cody Birdsong scored on a wild pitch to make the lead 2-0.  Troy Wehde scored on a passed ball to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead.  

The Hawks struck for five runs in the top of the sixth inning.  The Hawks loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth.  Two runs scored on an error by the Tritons shortstop to give the Hawks a 5-0 lead.  

Jeff Hightower walked to load the bases again.  TJ Tamaccio doubled to give the Hawks a 7-0 lead.  Hightower would score on a passed ball to give the Hawks an 8-0 lead.  

Hawks starter Jimmy McDonald was nearly un-hittable as he worked a seven-inning complete game shutout.  McDonald surrendered just two hits and two walks.  He also struck out seven Tritons in the 8-0 win.  

Game 2
QU plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning to give starter Riley Martin a 3-0 advantage before toeing the rubber.  

Birdsong and Wehde both singled and JC DeMuri doubled to score Birdsong.  Michael Nielsen grounded out to second base to score Wehde and DeMuri advanced to third.  DeMuri scored on a Chandler Purcell single to give the Hawks the 3-0 lead.  

Riley Martin worked four innings of shutout baseball before handing the ball off to Brandan Moriarty.  

In the sixth inning, Michael Nielsen singled home Troy Wehde to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead.  

The Hawks added another run in the seventh inning as Brynn Martinez sac fly scored TJ Tamaccio to give the Hawks a 5-0 advantage.  

Moriarty held the Tritons scoreless through the seventh inning.  

QU plated three runs in the top of the eighth on a Chandler Purcell three-run home run which gave the Hawks an 8-0 lead.  

Jack Widhalm and Sam Stephens completed the shutout with scoreless eighth and ninth to give the Hawks their second 8-0 win of the day.
