Birdsong Goes 4-5, Scores 3 Runs: Hawks Beat Lynx 7-5

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team traveled to Sauget, Illinois to take on NAIA opponent Lindenwood- Belleville University.  Cody Birdsong tallied four hits and scored three runs to lead the Hawks to a 7-5 win.  

Play by Play

The Hawks got on the board early, scoring a run in the top half of the first inning.  Brynn Martinez reached on an error to start off the game. Cody Birdsong followed with a ringing single to left field to put runners on first and second with no one out. 

Troy Wehde got the Hawks on the scoreboard with an RBI single to left field to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.  

The next three Hawks were retired, and QU took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the first.  

The Lynx answered right back with a run of their own in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1. 

In the bottom of the second inning, the Lynx took advantage of several Hawk miscues.  The Lynx scored three runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 4-1 lead.  The Hawks committed two errors in the inning to give the Lynx extra outs to work with. 

QU plated a run in the top of the third to cut the lead to 4-2.  Cody Birdsong singled with one out and was driven home by JC DeMuri to bring the Lynx lead to 4-2.  

The Hawks chipped away at the Lynx lead in the top of the fifth as Cody Birdsong collected his third hit of the game with one out in the frame.  Troy Wehde walked, and the Hawks had runners on first and second with one out. 

A wild pitch advanced Birdsong and Wehde to second and third with one out.  

JC DeMuri lifted a sac fly to right field to score Birdsong and cut the lead to 4-3.  

The Hawks found their stride in the top of the seventh.  

TJ Tamaccio led off the inning with a walk and scored all the way from first on a throwing error by the Lynx pitcher on a Brynn Martinez sac bunt attempt.  

With Martinez on third, Cody Birdsong lifted a double to left center field to give the Hawks a 5-4 lead. 

After a passed ball moved Birdsong to third base, JC DeMuri lifted another sac fly to right field to score Birdsong. 

Michael Nielsen followed with a towering home run through a stiff wind to give the Hawks a 7-4 lead. 

Jack Widhalm worked a scoreless seventh to maintain the Hawks lead at 7-4.  

Alex Pribyl worked a scoreless eighth to hold the Hawks lead at 7-4.  

Cole Crawford finished the game to pick up his seventh save of the year and give the Hawks a 7-5 win.
