QUINCY, Ill. - The QU baseball team split its doubleheader with Truman State Friday afternoon (Apr. 13). The Hawks fell in game one 10-4 before winning the second game of the doubleheader 8-2.
Play by Play:
Game 1
The Bulldogs took the early lead in game one of the doubleheader. A solo home run and a two-RBI double gave Truman State a 3-0 lead after three full innings.
A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth pushed the Bulldogs lead to 4-0 through four innings of play.
The Hawks got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning. Cody Birdsong homered to right field to lead off the inning and cut the Bulldogs lead to 4-1.
Truman State answered right back with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to 6-1.
QU got three runs back in the top of the seventh. Matt Hilmes doubled to lead off the inning. TJ Tamaccio reached on an error which scored Hilmes to cut the lead to 6-2.
Brynn Martinez singled to score Tamaccio and bring the score to 6-3.
Birdsong doubled to center field to score Martinez and the Hawks trailed 6-4 after the top of the seventh.
The Bulldogs plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh to push the lead to 8-4.
Truman State added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend the lead to 10-4 and take the first game of the doubleheader 10-4.
Game 2
The Hawks responded in the second game of the doubleheader.
Cody Birdsong scored on an RBI single by Troy Wehde in the top of the first inning to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the second inning at 1-1.
Birdsong continued his strong day at the plate with a two-run home run to right center field and give the Hawks a 3-1 lead.
The Hawks added another run in the inning on a Chandler Purcell single to score Troy Wehde and give the Hawks a 4-1 lead.
QU worked out of a jam in the bottom of the third as the Bulldogs loaded the bases but were unable to score.
The Hawks plated two runs in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 6-1. Brynn Martinez brought home Matt Hilmes on a sacrifice fly and Cody Birdsong scored Jake Viaene on an RBI single.
Jeff Hightower gave the Hawks a six-run lead on his fifth home run of the season in the top of the fifth.
The Bulldogs pushed across a run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Hawks lead to 7-2.
Cody Birdsong delivered his fourth RBI of the game in the top of the sixth to give the Hawks an 8-2 lead.
Jack Widhalm set the Bulldogs down for the remaining two innings and the Hawks picked up an 8-2 win in the second game of the doubleheader.
