QUINCY, Ill. - The QU baseball team took the GLVC series over the Truman State Bulldogs Saturday (Apr. 14). The Hawks swept the Bulldogs on the second day of the series with the Hawks beating the Bulldogs 9-7 and 14-4.
Play by Play:
Game 1
The Bulldogs scored five runs in the top of the first to grab a large lead over the Hawks.
QU plated a run in the bottom of the frame on a Troy Wehde sacrifice fly to score Brynn Martinez.
After a scoreless top of the second, the Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. The Hawks plated four runs on four hits in the frame.
The Bulldogs retook the lead 6-5 in the top of the fifth inning.
JC DeMuri was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Michael Nielsen doubled to scored DeMuri and tie the game.
Matt Hilmes singled home Nielsen to give the Hawks a 7-6 lead. The Hawks added another run as TJ Tamaccio drove a sacrifice fly to center field to score Hilmes and give the Hawks an 8-6 lead.
The Bulldogs loaded the bases with no one out in the top of the sixth.
Cole Crawford got a fly out which plated a run for the Bulldogs and cut the lead to 8-7. Crawford got a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.
The Hawks added a run to give QU a two-run cushion headed into the seventh.
Crawford set the Bulldogs down in order in the seventh to pick up his eighth save of the season and give the Hawks a 9-7 win.
Game 2
An 18 hit performance by the Hawks in the second game of the day gave the Hawks a 14-4 win over the Bulldogs in the final game of the series.
The Hawks trailed 1-0 after the top of the first.
Cody Birdsong homered to tie the game in the bottom of the first and two more runs for the Hawks scored on a Chandler Purcell single to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead.
Another run crossed for the Bulldogs in the top of the second to cut the lead to 3-2.
Birdsong lifted his second home run of the game to give the Hawks a 5-2 lead. Another run in the frame gave the Hawks a 6-2 lead.
The Hawks continued the offensive outburst, capped by a six-run bottom of the fifth inning to give the Hawks a 13-4 lead.
A single by Purcell to score Michael Nielsen in the bottom of the seventh gave the Hawks a 10 run lead and the game was shortened due to the 10 run rule.
Four Hawks finished with three hits in the game.
