Baseball Splits GLVC Doubleheader With Missouri S&T

QUINCY, Ill. - The QU baseball team split its doubleheader with Missouri S&T Saturday (Apr. 21).  The Hawks tossed a shutout in the first game of the doubleheader, winning 9-0, before dropping the nightcap 7-5.   

Play by Play:

Game 1
The Hawks pitching staff allowed just three hits in the first game of the GLVC doubleheader against the Miners.  Starter Riley Martin surrendered just two hits in six innings of work.  

The southpaw worked around five walks and two hit batsmen in his scoreless outing.  

QU gave Martin a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.  

Senior first baseman Troy Wehde doubled to left center field to score Cody Birdsong and Brynn Martinez.  Wehde later scored on a single by Michael Nielsen.  Nielsen scored after a Miners error allowed for the Hawks to take a 4-0 lead.  

Nielsen belted a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth to extend the Hawks lead to 5-0.  

An inning later Nielsen drove home Cody Birdsong on a sacrifice fly and the Hawks led 6-0.   Later in the inning, Jeff Hightower singled home Wehde and Chandler Purcell as QU stretched its lead to 8-0.  

Wehde singled home Brynn Martinez in the bottom of the eighth to give the Hawks their final run of the game.  

Karl Hirsch and Andrew Grieshaber combined to work three innings of scoreless relief as the Hawks took game one 9-0.  

Game 2
Missouri S&T starter Dan Borek held the Hawks in check as he limited the Hawks to just two hits through six innings of play in the second game of the doubleheader. 

The Miners scored one run in the third inning, two in the fifth, and two in the sixth to hold a 5-0 lead over the Hawks heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.  

Troy Wehde led off the bottom of the seventh with a single.  JC DeMuri followed with a single of his own to put a pair of runners on with no one out.  Michael Nielsen singled to right field to load the bases for junior left fielder Chandler Purcell.  

Purcell delivered a two-RBI single to cut the Miners lead to 5-2.  

The next two Hawks were retired and brought TJ Tamaccio to the plate with a pair of runners on.  

Tamaccio doubled to right field, scoring Nielsen and Purcell, and the Hawks trailed by one. 

Brynn Martinez tied the game with a single to right field.  

Martinez stole second and the Hawks had the winning run in scoring position with two outs.  

Cody Birdsong battled a 13 pitch at bat before being retired and the Hawks would go to extra innings.  

The Miners scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth and QU fell in the second game of the day 7-5 to the Miners.
