Nielsen's Home Run Powers Hawks To Sweep Of Missouri S&T

QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks baseball team took the GLVC weekend series from Missouri S&T with two wins on Sunday (Apr. 22).  The Hawks won the doubleheader with scores of 3-2 and 5-1.

Play by Play:

Game 1
Jimmy McDonald was masterful in his complete game win over the Miners in game one.  After allowing a run in the top of the first, McDonald settled in.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Brynn Martinez reached on an error by the shortstop to lead off the frame.  Martinez advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher.  JC DeMuri singled home Martinez and the game was tied at 1-1.

Both teams were held scoreless until the top of the fifth inning.  With two outs in the inning, Lucas Swindle doubled to score Nathan Volkmann to give the Miners a 2-1 lead.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Troy Wehde led off the inning with a single.

Michael Nielsen blasted a two-run home run to left field to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead. The Hawks took a one-run lead into the final inning of play.

Jimmy McDonald struck out the first two batters in the inning.  After a two-out walk and a stolen base, McDonald got a groundout to finish his complete game.

McDonald scattered seven hits while striking out six in his fourth win of the year.

Game 2
Aaron Stone continued the strong pitching day for the Hawks.  Stone allowed one run in 6 1/3 innings of work.

QU took the lead in the bottom of the third inning as JC DeMuri lifted a sac fly to center field to score Brynn Martinez.

The Hawks added another run in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by senior catcher Jake Viaene.

The Miners scored a run in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 2-1.

In the top of the seventh, Stone allowed a double to lead off the inning.  A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third with one out in the inning.

A call to the bullpen brought on freshman Jack Widhalm to replace Stone.  Widhalm got a strikeout and a line out to end the Miners threat.

QU added a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by JC DeMuri which scored TJ Tamaccio.

Alex Pribyl worked a scoreless eighth inning and the Hawks came to bat.
