Hawks Split Doubleheader Against UMSL

QUINCY, Ill. - On a cold and windy day in St. Louis the Quincy University baseball team split its doubleheader with the University of Missouri-St. Louis Friday (Apr. 6).  The Hawks won game one 10-6 and fell in game two 3-2. 

Play by Play:

Game 1
Just two batters into the game Cody Birdsong gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead with a home run to right field.  

The Tritons took advantage of a Hawks fielding error to score a run in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1.  

Another solo home run, this time by Chandler Purcell, gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead.  

A second straight inning of Hawks mistakes allowed for the Tritons to tie the game at 2-2.  

With two on and two out in the top of the third, sophomore Michael Nielsen launched a three-run home run to give the Hawks a 5-2 lead.  

The Hawks added another run in the top of the fifth on a JC DeMuri RBI double to left field, scoring Brynn Martinez.  

Trailing 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth, the Tritons scored a pair of runs on four hits and a Hawks error to cut the QU lead to 6-4.  

The Tritons scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 6-6.  

Chandler Purcell led off the top of the eighth inning with a single and stole second to put a runner on second with one out. 

Junior Jeff Hightower laced a double to left field to give the Hawks a 7-6 lead.  TJ Tamccio followed with a single to right field, scoring Hightower.  

The Hawks scored another run on a bases-loaded walk by Troy Wehde.  

QU added another run in the ninth to push the lead to 10-6.  

Cole Crawford worked a scoreless ninth to give the Hawks a 10-6 win.  

Game 2
The Tritons plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead.  

The Hawks were held in check until the top of the sixth inning.  JC DeMuri doubled home Troy Wehde to cut the Tritons lead to 2-1.  

The Tritons were able to push a run across in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 3-1.  

The first two Hawks were retired in the top of the seventh inning.  Jake Viaene, TJ Tamaccio, and Brynn Martinez each reached base to load the bases.  Viaene would score on a passed ball and cut the lead to 3-2.  

The tying run was stranded on third and the Hawks dropped game two of the doubleheader 3-2.
