Hawks Baseball Takes Two From William Jewell

QUINCY, Ill. - The QU baseball team picked up a pair of GLVC wins over the William Jewell Cardinals Saturday (Apr. 28).  The Hawks defeated the Cardinals with scores of 7-0, 8-3 in the doubleheader.  

Play by Play:

Game 1

Riley Martin was masterful in his eight innings of work in the Hawks 7-0 win.  Martin went eight innings, allowed just three hits and struck out seven in his outing.  

The Hawks gave Martin a 1-0 lead after the top of the first.  JC DeMuri brought home Brynn Martinez on a sac fly.  

DeMuri delivered again in the third inning with a triple to left center to score Troy Wehde and give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.  

DeMuri continued his strong day at the plate with a double to left field in the fifth, scoring Wehde for the second time.  The Hawks held a 3-0 lead after five innings of play.  

Chandler Purcell led off the top of the sixth with a home run to push the Hawks lead to 4-0.  

JC DeMuri roped an RBI double to score Troy Wehde for the third time and give the Hawks a 5-0 lead through seven innings. 

The Hawks added to their lead in the top eighth.  Troy Wehde doubled to score Brynn Martinez and Jeff Hightower and push the lead to 7-0.  

Martin handed the ball to Brandan Moriarty in the ninth to complete the shutout.  Moriarty needed just three pitches to complete the shutout and give the Hawks a 7-0 win.  

Game 2

A high scoring first inning saw the Hawks take a 2-0 lead after the top of the first. 

Cody Birdsong blasted a two-run home run to give the Hawks a quick 2-0 advantage.  

The Cardinals plated three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead. 

The first three batters reached base for the Hawks in the top of the fourth.  Cody Birdsong walked to force in a run and tie the game at 3-3.  

Troy Wehde singled to score a pair of runs and give the Hawks a 5-3 lead.  

JC DeMuri singled to load the bases.  Michael Nielsen singled to score two more runs and give the Hawks a 7-3 lead.  

QU added a run in the top of the fifth.  Troy Wehde brought home TJ Tamaccio with a sacrifice fly to extend the Hawks lead to 8-3.  

After allowing three runs in the first inning.  Nick Stroud settled in for the Hawks.  Stroud struck out 10 Cardinals en route to his sixth win of the season.  

Karl Hirsch pitched the final inning and two-thirds to secure the 8-3 win.

Brynn Martinez broke two QU career records in the Hawks two wins.  He now holds the record for at-bats and runs scored in a career.  Martinez now has 785 at-bats in his career and is the only QU baseball player to ever score 200 or more runs (202).
