Hawks Drop Series Finale To McKendree 4-2 In 10 Innings

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team fell to the McKendree Bearcats 4-2 Sunday (Mar. 4) in the series finale.  

The Hawks fell in extra innings as the Bearcats scored a pair of runs in the top of the 10th to beat the Hawks.  

The scoring started early as the Bearcats plated a run in the top of the first to put McKendree up 1-0.  

The Hawks shortstop Brynn Martinez responded in the bottom of the first with a leadoff home run to tie the score at 1-1.  

The Bearcats scored a run in the top of the fourth after a passed ball allowed McKendree to take a 2-1 lead.  

Both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the seventh.  Troy Wehde was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the seventh.  

A pair of outs brought senior Matt Hilmes to the plate.  Hilmes delivered with a double to the wall in left-center field to score Wehde and tie the game at 2-2.  

The Hawks had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the 8th as Martinez singled and stole second with two outs.   The Bearcats got a strikeout to end the Hawks threat.  

Alex Pribyl struck out the side in the top of the ninth to give the Hawks another opportunity in the bottom of the ninth.  

Wehde led off the bottom of the ninth with a single.  JC DeMuri struck out and Cody Birdsong grounded into a double play to send the game into extra innings.  

After the first two Bearcats reached base the Hawks got a force out at third base.  The Bearcats got a pair of singles which brought home a run.  A sac fly brought home another run and the Bearcats lead 4-2.  

The Hawks were set down in order in the bottom of the 10th and fell 4-2.  

Martinez finished 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.  

The Hawks fall 5-5 on the season.
