QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team swept the University of Wisconsin Parkside this weekend 4-0. The Hawks got four quality starts from its starting pitchers in the sweep. All four starters collected wins over the Rangers.
In the first game of the weekend, Aaron Stone went seven strong innings, striking out four and scattered five hits by the Rangers. The Hawks scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, capped by an RBI double by senior outfielder JC DeMuri.
After tying the game in the fourth at 2-2, the Hawks scored a pair of runs to retake the lead. TJ Tamaccio led off the inning with a double and was scored on a double by senior shortstop Brynn Martinez. The next batter, Cody Birdsong, doubled home Martinez to put the Hawks up 4-2.
The Rangers plated a run in the top of the sixth to cut the Hawks lead to 4-3.
QU scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead back to 6-3.
The Hawks exploded in for four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Tamaccio launched a three-run home run and Troy Wehde drove in Martinez with a sac fly to push the lead to 11-3.
The Hawks would hold on for a 12-7 win in game one.
Game 2
Tamaccio, Martinez, DeMuri, and Birdsong all finished with two or more hits in game one.
The Hawks pitched three straight shutouts in the next three games.
QU scored in every inning in the second game of the first day. The Hawks won 13-0 over the Rangers.
Martinez and Birdsong each finished with three hits in the second game. Justin Eads collected two hits in his first career start.
Matt Hilmes, Jake Viaene, and Michael Nielsen all hit home runs in game two.
Nick Stroud tossed five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out eight. Brendan Saak and Nik Glanz each tossed shutout innings in the 13-0 win.
Game 3
The Hawks continued the strong weekend on Saturday.
Jimmy McDonald tossed a complete game shutout in the 5-0 win over the Rangers on Saturday.
QU scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Martinez and Birdsong walked to start the first inning. JC DeMuri doubled home Martinez to put the Hawks up 1-0. Michael Nielsen scored Birdsong and DeMuri to put QU up 3-0.
Tamaccio hit his second home run of the weekend to put the Hawks ahead 4-0.
QU scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth as Wehde singled home Martinez.
McDonald struck out 10 batters and allowed just two hits in the 5-0 win.
Game 4
The Hawks offense scored in the first three innings in the 4-0 series finale win.
Martinez finished the weekend with a 3-4 performance.
He led off the first inning with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. He advanced to third on a Birdsong fly out to right field. DeMuri laced a two-strike RBI single into center field to put the Hawks up 1-0.
The Hawks scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Jake Viaene brought home Tamaccio on a sac fly. Martinez singled home Eads to put the Hawks up 3-0.
Tamaccio scored Troy Wehde in the bottom of the third to put the Hawks up 4-0.
Brandan Moriarty went five innings and allowed just one hit and struck out four to pick up the win. Jack Widhalm, Sam Stephens, Karl Hirsch and Cole Crawford each worked scoreless innings to secure the 4-0 win.
The Hawks improved to 9-5 on the season. The Hawks travel to Evansville, Indiana next weekend to take on the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles.
